Gamer is a science fiction - action thriller from Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor from the year 2009 .

action

In a future world not very distant, the eccentric billionaire Ken Castle invented the online game Slayers , in which convicts on death row become real characters. In this game, which is popular worldwide, they compete against each other as modern gladiators in huge competition zones - by players, via control cells implanted in the brain, externally controlled. They act against their will and often without their own control over their bodies.

Convict Kable is the game's great hero. As the undisputed number one, millions of viewers around the world watch his battles. He is controlled by the teenage Simon and has survived the deadly game longest to date. So he could be the first to be pardoned after surviving 30 battles and finally to see his wife and daughter again. What he doesn't know: his wife has meanwhile lost custody of the daughter and is herself a character in Society , another online game that uses the same technology as Slayers , in which the players act out their perversions.

Ken Castle, on the other hand, cannot allow Kable to win the game and be pardoned, as Kable has memories of illegal experiments in connection with the development of the control cells. For this reason, he puts a battle-tested mercenary on Kable, who, in contrast to him, is not externally controlled and can therefore react faster.

There seems to be a way out when the underground Humanz tries to destroy the perfidious game for good . Again and again they paralyze servers , hack into games and disrupt Castles appearance on a TV show. Above all, the underground fighters not only contact Simon, but also Kable himself, as they are interested in his memories of the experiments. But even when a way out of gaming hell seems to open up with the help of Humanz, Kable's nightmare is not over yet. It turns out that Ken Castle has brain cells with which he can control any character from Slayers or Society within his reach, which he would like to expand to the whole world.

He forces Kable under his control and wants to "eliminate" him for good, but with the help of Humanz, Simon manages to hack into Ken's system and take control of Kable. The player and “character” together now manage to end the power-hungry game of Ken Castles with his death.

Production and publication

The film was one of the first productions in which digital cameras of the type RED ONE were used almost exclusively .

The German theatrical release was postponed from September 17, 2009 to January 7, 2010. The film was released in Germany in two versions: With an FSK approval from 18 years, which was shortened by almost 21 seconds. This version was shown in theaters and released on DVD . The second version was shortened by a further 8 minutes and 33 seconds and released exclusively on DVD with an FSK rating of 16 and over. Later, an uncut version was submitted to the FSK for examination, which was also rated FSK from 18 and was released as an "Extended Version" on Blu-ray . However, this version is not completely uncensored either. When there were several broken necks, the German soundtrack was significantly toned down compared to the original sound.

The film opened in German cinemas on January 7, 2010.

Reviews

The film received mostly negative reviews, earning a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 76 reviews. At Metacritic , a Metascore of 27, based on 13 reviews, could be achieved.

“No question about it, in terms of aesthetics and action, the film does exactly what the trailer promises. But while Taylor and Neveldine in the 'Crank' films led their thin stories to absurdity through ingeniously confused ideas, here they spice up their lead storm with social criticism for dummies. [...] At least you can rely on Gerard Butler: Testosterone gushes out of all pores of the smart muscle pack. With this hero you win every daddling event. Conclusion: Brute lead thunderstorms that clumsily try to couple brilliant hardcore action with social criticism and slapstick. "

“Elaborately staged action film that counteracts its ostensibly critical examination of computer games that glorify violence with dissolute, sadistic excesses. The brutal, hectic acts of violence are really celebrated. "

"'Gamer' is bursting with small staging ideas, but the narrative arc quickly falls by the wayside between the orgiastic cuts."
