Christopher Noonan (born November 14, 1952 in Sydney , Australia ) is an Australian film director and screenwriter .

Life

At the age of 16, Noonan made the short film Could It Happen Here? for which he received an award at the Sydney Film Festival . In 1973 he was one of the first students at the Australian Film Television and Radio School in North Ryde , New South Wales, alongside Gillian Armstrong and Phillip Noyce .

In the first five years after his training, Noonan made short films and documentaries for the state film company Film Australia .

In 1980 he documented the lives of actors in a theater group with Down syndrome or other cognitive disabilities in the film His Stepping Out , which earned him considerable recognition.

In 1984 he first worked for Australian television as a director of the miniseries Cowra Breakout and in 1987 he made his first TV film with The Riddle of the Stinson and the miniseries Vietnam .

Noonan made his debut as a mainstream director in 1995 in the hit fantasy comedy A Piglet Name Babe , for which he immediately received an Oscar nomination for "best director" and "best screenplay".

Noonan worked on three film productions, including Miss Potter with Ewan McGregor and Renée Zellweger , which appeared in 2006.

Awards

For a pig called Babe he was also u. a. nominated twice for the Oscar and the BAFTA Award as well as once for the Saturn Award and the WGA Award .
