action
The new university graduate Andrea Sachs, known as Andy, is taking on a position as second assistant to Miranda Priestly, the icy and very demanding editor-in-chief of the leading fashion magazine Runway (references to Anna Wintour , editor-in-chief of Vogue , are unmistakable). Andy sees this job as a qualification and a springboard for bigger tasks. She has no idea about fashion, but hears from various people that millions of women would die for this job . The employees, especially the first assistant Emily, make fun of Andy, because in their eyes she is completely impossibly dressed and with size 36 she is way too fat.
The workloads of the following weeks are high, and Andy’s expectations of her boss seem unrealizable. In their efforts to meet the requirements, the artistic director Nigel supports them in changing their appearance and appearance and adapting them to the expectations of their employees and their boss. Your reputation in the editorial office increases. She received her first recognition from the editor-in-chief when she was able to obtain the manuscript of an unpublished Harry Potter volume for her boss's children through reporter Christian Thompson . Andy is slowly taking a liking to the glamorous world of fashion. Andy's transformation, however, puts a strain on her relationship with her friends and especially with her friend, the saucier Nate.
Instead of Emily, Andy is supposed to accompany Miranda Priestly to the annual fashion show in Paris. When Andy emphasizes how much her colleague's trip means, Miranda replies that she must have the best team with her and that only taking part in the trip will secure Andy's job. While Andy calls Emily and wants to deliver this message to her, her colleague is hit and injured on the streets of New York.
Shortly before the trip to Paris, Nate confronts Andy and tells her that they now live in two separate worlds and that in reality she has a "relationship" with her boss. Andy replies that no one would get upset about Miranda's demanding leadership style if she were a man. However, since her boss calls her at this moment and she cannot refuse again, the couple decides to split up and take Paris as a break.
When Andy arrives in Paris, he meets the reporter Christian Thompson again. The two spend a night together. Andy learns from Thompson that Miranda's position is to be filled by the editor-in-chief of the French runway , her direct competitor. She tries to warn Miranda, but is turned away. Meanwhile, the artistic director Nigel wants to get out of the editorial office and take over the job of managing director of a fashion company. He is happy and celebrates with Andy. During a reception, however, Miranda announced that the well-paid position of managing director should not be taken over by Nigel, but by the French editor who was supposed to be her successor.
Andy later sits in the back seat with Miranda during a car ride. Miranda reveals that she knew about her impending dismissal and acted in good time: she threatened the owner of the magazine that the fashion designers, editors and models she had discovered over the years would leave the magazine with her. Andy insists that she can never do what Miranda did to Nigel. She replies that Andy has already done the same to her colleague Emily. When Andy points out that she might not want to be like Miranda, she mocks and says that of course everyone would want to lead their lives.
After getting out of the car, Andy leaves Miranda's entourage unnoticed. Miranda notices the disappearance and calls Andy, but she throws her cell phone into a fountain.
Andy is applying for a new job as a New York newspaper editor. Miranda faxes the boss and explains that none of her assistants have disappointed her like Andy, but he'd be an idiot if he didn't hire her. He then gives Andy the job. At the same time, Nate finds a new job as a sous chef in a renowned restaurant in Boston. Andy and Nate make up again.
A little later, Andy calls Miranda's office to ask Emily to remove her clothes from Paris. Emily is dismissive, but agrees and smiles after the phone call. Then she turns to the new second assistant, who has now taken Andy's place, and says that the footsteps she is now following are very big.
Andy sees Miranda getting into her car on the street. She waves to her former boss, but she pretends not to have noticed Andy. In the car she takes off her sunglasses and smiles for a moment, then harshly tells her driver to drive off.

Reviews
James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was both an “energetic satire on the fashion world” and a “melodrama”. It works as a satire, but not as a melodrama. Berardinelli praised the "strong" portrayals by Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt. Anne Hathaway lacks presence. The reviewer wrote that he enjoyed the film except for the last “whiny” half hour and the “artificial” ending.
Carina Chocano praised Meryl Streep in the Los Angeles Times for her "weird top form". The comedy is "hot" and "surprisingly funny".
The lexicon of international films judged: “The comedy film, which is based on an autobiographically colored key novel, makes fun of the fashion world of vanities and the industries that are attached to it, without being able to deny their appeal entirely. Played in the main role in a fascinating way, the film offers an amusing, but ultimately well-known caricature of surface stimuli. "
