Azure Ray ( engl. Azur beam , sky-blue light beam ) is a US Musikerinnenduo consisting of Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink . Currently, the artists are in Omaha ( Nebraska ) home. Her music ranges between electronica , indie pop and alternative country . The two are complemented by the keyboard player Jackie Lyons. They publish their albums on the independent label Saddle Creek .

history

Both multi-instrumentalists are originally from Birmingham, Alabama . They met at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, Alabama, where Taylor studied ballet and Fink theater . In 1997 they started their indie pop / rock band Little Red Rocket and, discovered by Remy Zero , received a recording contract with Geffen Records , which was terminated after Geffen merged with Universal Music . Their band at the time has been compared in style to groups like Belly or the Throwing Muses .

Taylor and Fink were now living in Athens, Georgia when they made their debut as Azure Ray in 2001 . This album represented a clear departure from the all too sweet indie pop , as it was presented both more introspectively and largely acoustically. The critics heard "enchanting siren-like singing ... daydreaming ... soft and gloomy." Influences of the music of the American Midwest can be seen in the duet singing and in the lyrics.

This made u. a. Moby also noticed the duo. He hired Azure Ray for the two songs Great Escape and Landing and as a support band for his tour.

In 2005 Taylor and Fink increasingly went their separate ways and released their first solo albums .

In September 2010 their 4th album, Drawing Down the Moon , was released.

style

The rather dark and disturbing lyrics of the duo contrast with the mostly confident melodies and the very soft but transparent vocals.

In addition to their collaboration on Azure Ray, Taylor and Fink are also active in other bands, e.g. B. with the bands Bright Eyes and Now It's Overhead .
