Pride is a British film made in 2014 by director Matthew Warchus and is based on actual events. The film premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2014 , where it won the Queer Palm Award .

Pride tells of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners , a group of gay activists who raised money for striking miners in 1984 . The film opened nationwide on October 30, 2014 in German cinemas.

action

In Great Britain , ruled by Margaret Thatcher , an unusual alliance of two groups was formed in the summer of 1984: A gay and lesbian group from London decided at the Gay Pride Demo in 1984 under the name "Lesbians and Gays for the Miners" ( Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners - LGSM) to raise funds for the families of striking miners . After initial rejections due to prejudice on the part of the union, the group looks for a place on its own to support. The small Welsh miners' village of Onllwyn agrees to meet. The unusual constellation causes irritation on both sides. Thanks to the commitment of some of the miners' wives and a furious dance performance by the eccentric Jonathan, the ice seems broken. However, one opponent of this alliance informs the press, which ridicules the strikers. A delegation from the site nevertheless comes to London for a return visit, where the organization organized a benefit concert with the band Bronski Beat . After the strike ended in 1985, the miners took several buses to the Gay Pride , where they were at the head of the train.

background

Historical background

The film is based on the life story of LGBT activist Mark Ashton and on the foundation of the LGSM campaign and its work. LGSM's London group supported striking miners in the Welsh regions of Vale of Neath and Swansea Valley by fundraising during the British miners' strike of 1984 and 1985. The Pits and Perverts benefit concert took place on December 10, 1984 at the Electric Ballroom in Camden Town . The gay bookstore Gay's The Word , also the headquarters of LGSM, still exists today and is located in Bloomsbury , London . Other historical figures appearing in the film include the Welsh human rights activist Hefina Headon and the Welsh politician and MP Siân James .

music

Christopher Nightingale wrote the score; only the brass arrangements come from Simon Lenton. The non-orchestral part of the score was recorded at Air Lyndhurst Studios in London . The musicians from The Tredegar Town Band were hired as soloists, Laurie Perkins (as Music Assistant also involved in the overall management of the musical design) and Ian Porthouse were on site as conductors. The German Film Orchestra Babelsberg was chosen as the orchestra , whose recordings were made (again under the direction of Laurie Perkins) in the Babelsberg “Scoring Stage” hall. The Welsh choir Fortza (under the direction of Osian Llyr Rowlands) was hired for the vocal passages, while Emyr Davies provided the Welsh translations. The conductor was Craig Yates. The choir recordings were made in the Acapela Studios in the Welsh capital Cardiff.

reception

Reviews

Pride was received mostly positively. “Matthew Warchus, who has staged Simpatico for the screen with Jeff Bridges for the first time since 15 years ago , brings with him a thrilling momentum from crowdpleaser stage productions [...], but also a lot of sensitivity and an infectious mixture of charm and warmth and joke. Grandiose aerial shots of the village nestled in the valley, with the winding streets and streams of the surrounding area, make for cinema viewing values. "( Anke Sterneborg : epd Film ) Furthermore," a dazzling ensemble of actors would turn great themes such as friendship, tolerance and solidarity into an abundance of intimate, true moments " ( Anke Sterneborg ) dissolve. According to film-dienst, “the warm-hearted social comedy does not spare either the political aspects or the personal problems of a time when prejudices and the fear of AIDS reached deep within families.” The film commission awards 4 out of 5 possible stars.

World editor Thomas Abeltshauser describes Pride as a "sympathetic comedy" and praises the performance of "Acting greats like Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West as well as numerous new faces." Although the Focus criticizesthat the film is sometimes a bit pathetic, But “like any good ensemble film, the British coal pot comedy tells a lot of stories and still doesn't lose sight of its theme: solidarity. You can achieve something together. "
