history

The original version of Diamond reached number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968 , was covered in the same year by ex- tee set singer Peter Tetteroo, who made it to number 5 in the Dutch and number 16 in the Belgian charts with his version. In the following years the song was covered more times; Among others by the Jamaican singer Tony Tribe, who turned the original pop song into a reggae-influenced song. His version reached number 64 on the UK charts.

The British reggae group UB40 recorded a cover version for their album Labor of Love in 1983 . According to UB40, the song was supposed to sound similar to Tribe's version, but they wanted to record the song in a higher and more modern reggae style. The UB40 version became a number one hit in the UK in August 1983 , and reached number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March of that year . The cover was a Toasting - verse by UB40 Member Astro added that occupies more than half of the song:

" Red Red Wine, you make me feel so fine
You keep me rocking all of the time.
"
" Red red wine, you make me feel so good.
You keep me happy all the time.
"

In 1988, DJ Bobby Stark recorded a dance version of the song which he played in Atlanta clubs . This made Red Red Wine popular again. UB40's record label A&M Records re- released the UB40 version as a single in the summer of 1988 , this time the piece also became a commercial success in the USA and reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1988. On other tours, Diamond only played the UB40- Reggae version of his song.
