Gerhard Weiß (born September 25, 1941 ) (nickname "Leo") was a football goalkeeper in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the East German football association DFV . He was there for ASK / FC Vorwärts Berlin and 1. FC Union Berlin in goal. White is both a junior and a B national player.

Athletic career

White's goalkeeping career began in 1954 with the company sports community (BSG) unit Kölleda . At the age of 18 he volunteered to serve in the GDR's National People's Army . He was used in the army sports community forward Rostock and was there goalkeeper in the GDR league team of Rostock . When a replacement for the 30-year-old goalkeeper of the upper division ASK Vorwärts Berlin, the top club of the army sports association and reigning GDR champion, Karl-Heinz Spickenagel , was sought in 1962 , Vorwärts Rostock delegated Weiss to ASK. There, white took over the role of goalkeeper at the beginning of the 1962/63 season, but was injured after the 6th match day. He was only used again in the second half of the season, but only irregularly, so that he was only 12 times in the league team during the entire season. He was represented by Alfred Zulkowski , with whom he fought a duel for the regular place in the ASK goal in the years to come. The duel ended in most seasons in favor of one year older Zulkowski. Only in 1965/66 could White have the most bets with 14:12.

In 1962 and 1963 he was used once in each international match of the youth national team of the GDR, in 1963 he also played an international match with the B national team.

White remained goalkeeper at ASK until the end of the 1967/68 season and was in the ASK goal in 54 of 156 league league games within six seasons, a rate of 35 percent. In the seasons 1964/65 and 1965/66 he was with the ASK and with the 1966 spin-off FC Vorwärts GDR champions. In the 1966/67 season white was not used in the league at all.

In the spring of 1968, white was discharged from the army and thus retired from FC Vorwärts Berlin. He joined local rivals 1. FC Union Berlin, who first used him in 1968/69 in his third-rate district league team Union II. White came to his first games with the first Union team in the second-rate GDR league in 1969/70, after Union had previously been relegated from the Oberliga. He shared the appearances in goal with the previous goalkeeper Rainer Ignaczak , who played 16 times, while White guarded the goal 14 times. After being promoted again, Ignaczak was initially number one in the Union goal in 1970/71, but from November 1970 on, White prevailed as the new regular goalkeeper and remained so until 1975. After 1. FC Union was relegated again in 1973, White had his Complete the last two seasons in the GDR league again. At the end of the 1974/75 season he announced his resignation from the goalkeeping post, but jumped again in September 1975 for the two injured new goalkeepers in two league games. After his final game Motor Babelsberg - 1. FC Union (1: 1) on September 27, 1975 he had come to 142 competitive games for Union, of which he had played 63 in the league. White then continued his football career as a goalkeeping coach at 1. FC Union Berlin.
