Karl-Heinz Spickenagel 1959

Karl-Heinz Spickenagel , also Spicke or Kalle (born January 17, 1932 in Berlin ; † March 19, 2012 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) was a German football player who was the goalkeeper of ASK Vorwärts Berlin three times - in the seasons 1958, 1960 and 1961/62 - won the GDR championship .

career

Clubs, 1947 to 1964

Youth and the beginning of senior citizenship, 1947 to 1954

In the youth of Fortuna Pankow, the trained toolmaker "Kalle" Spickenagel experienced the first few years in club football after the end of the Second World War and also made a short detour across the still open sector border to Hertha BSC . When BSG Einheit Pankow played the semi-final game against Lokomotive Stendal in the FDGB Cup of the 1951/52 season on September 7, 1952, the ex-Fortune was already guarding the gate of Einheit. But he could not prevent the 3-0 defeat in the final against VP Dresden with Günter Schröter and Johannes Matzen . With unit Pankow he did not get into the top group in the rounds of 1952/53 and 1953/54 in the second-class league and after 50 missions in the summer of 1954 he moved to SC DHfK Leipzig , in whose football department a GDR-wide focus should be established. His achievements, which led to the delegation to Leipzig, had already brought him appointments to the district selection of East Berlin and the GDR youth team, with a game against Hungary on February 7, 1954. The Berliner played twelve games in season 3 of the league in Leipzig in 1954/55 and found himself back in Berlin after the DHfK team was dissolved in January 1955. There he stood, starting with the match against BSG Motor Zwickau on the 15th matchday of this round , then another twelve times in the upper league of the ZSK Forward KVP Berlin.

ZASK Vorwärts Berlin, 1955 to 1964

With the central sports club forward of the barracked people's police from Berlin, he moved into the final of the FDGB Cup for the second time in 1956 . In Magdeburg, however, SC Chemie Halle-Leuna prevailed with 2-1 goals. In the game year 1957, the objective goalkeeper conceded only 22 goals in 23 appearances in the league and took second place in the table with forward. When Spickenagel won the first GDR championship with the “Red-Yellows” in 1958, the team of coach Kurt Fritzsche and midfield conductor Lothar Meyer scored 36: 6 goals and 26: 0 points in thirteen home games. It was followed by the second runner-up in 1959 and the second title win in 1960, nine points ahead of SC Dynamo Berlin . Before the 1961/62 season, the goalkeeper of what was now the ASK (Army Sports Club) Vorwärts Berlin experienced the return to the autumn-spring rhythm in the game operations of the GDR league . To this end, three series of thirteen games each were played. After 39 games, "Kalle" Spickenagel celebrated the third GDR championship. The “final” on the final day was won by ASK with 3-1 goals on the Baltic Sea against runner-up SC Empor Rostock . With the 1962/63 round, the 30-year-old began to withdraw from the team. In the two championship rounds 1962/63 and 1963/64 he played only eight games in the GDR league and ended his playing career on May 3, 1964 at Chemie Leipzig . From January 1955 to 1964 Karl-Heinz Spickenagel played 189 games in the GDR Oberliga, and from 1952 to 1954 there were 62 more appearances in the first division (second division in the GDR).

International Games, 1954 to 1962

After Spickenagel had already been used in the youth national team of the GDR on February 7, 1954 , the Berliner made his debut in the fifth international match of the GDR national team on September 26, 1954 in Rostock against Poland in the A selection. After Wolfgang Klank from Dessau had played the first three international matches and Günter Busch from Leipzig had played the fourth official selection game, "Kalle" Spickenagel took over the regular position in the goal of the GDR national team for the next eight years. Even the goalkeeper of the SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt championship team , Klaus Thiele , could not change this status. From 1952 to May 3, 1962, Spickenagel was in goal in 29 of 41 international matches played. Outstanding were his participation in the World Cup qualifiers for the World Cup tournaments in 1958 and 1962. Before Sweden in 1958, the GDR had to do with Wales and Czechoslovakia in qualifying. The competition was opened with a surprising 2-1 victory on May 19, 1957 in front of 110,000 spectators in Leipzig against Wales. Even the internationally recognized top-class player John Charles could not prevent the success of the team around goalkeeper Spickenagel, Herbert Schoen , the brothers Karl and Siegfried Wolf , Manfred Kaiser , Günter Schröter and Willy Tröger that day. The team was unable to repeat this performance four weeks later on June 16 in Brno in the game against Czechoslovakia despite a 1-0 lead at half-time. "Kalle" Spickenagel was defeated three times in the second half of the game and Josef Masopust's team won 3-1 goals. The opponents in qualifying for the 1962 World Cup in Chile were the Netherlands and Hungary in 1961. The ASK goalkeeper guarded the goal in all three games played, but it did not result in more than a 1: 1 respectable win on May 14, 1961 in Leipzig against the Netherlands. The GDR selection was refused entry visas for the second leg in Holland due to the construction of the Berlin Wall. With the game against the reigning European champions Soviet Union on May 3, 1962 in Moscow, Spickenagel said goodbye after 29 appointments from the GDR national team.

On September 23, 1959, Spickenagel took part in the second Olympic elimination game of the GDR's Olympic soccer team against the DFB amateur team, which was lost 2-1 and thus the GDR soccer team's participation in the Olympic soccer tournament in Rome after the 2-0 defeat in the first leg prevented.

He was also able to prove his skills in nine games from 1959 to 1962 in the European Cup . He also had additional international appearances through several city games with the selection Berlin / East. His years of consistency in performance, his error rate was low, and his versatile goalkeeping virtues distinguished the player Karl-Heinz Spickenagel.

Trainer / official

After completing his active playing career, Spickenagel worked from 1964 as an assistant coach for the 1st team, later as a coach in the junior division of ASK Vorwärts Berlin. After the move from the DFV headquarters to Frankfurt (Oder) was ordered in 1971, he held the position of coach of the Liga-Elf FC Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) II until 1975. From 1982 the ex-player, who had meanwhile risen to lieutenant colonel, was club chairman at FC Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) until 1986. Spickenagel also worked as chairman of the children's and youth sports commission at the DFV. In spring 2012, the former national goalkeeper died a good two months after his 80th birthday in Brandenburg.
