Tea set

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tee Set was a Dutch beat music group of the Nederbiet direction from Delft , which emerged in the 1960s with rhythm and blues music and since the early 1970s with pop music. The most famous hit from Tee Set is the world hit Ma Belle Amie from 1969.

development

The group was founded in 1965 by the singer Peter Tetteroo, the two guitarists and bassists Gerard Romeyn and Polle Eduard and the drummer Carry Janssen. This line-up is featured on the cover of the first single, Early In The Morning . Robbie Plazier then joined the group as organist. With the support of the songwriter Hans van Eijck , who contributed four pieces, the album Emotion was recorded. After this album was released, Plazier was replaced as a permanent member of the group by van Eijck. Gerard Romeyn left the group in early 1967 and joined The Motions as the successor to Robbie van Leeuwen. Romeyn was replaced by the English guitarist Ray Fenwick at Tee Set .

A disagreement between Tetteroo and manager Theo Cuppens on the one hand and the other band members on the other led to tensions in the group. The income that Cuppens had made with the hit Don't You Leave , an old blues number for which the manager had given his own name as the author, played a role. Fenwick, Van Eijck and Eduard left and formed a new group After Tea . Carry Jansen already belonged to this group, so a quartet is shown on the photo cover of Now's The Time . To continue Tee Set, Tetteroo hired three new musicians from the Amsterdam group James Mean: bassist Franklin Madjid, drummer Joop Blom and guitarist Ferdi Karmelk . With Jan-Pieter Boekhoorn as the new keyboardist, Tee Set became a quintet. That was the end of James Mean, because their singer Michel van Dijk was employed by the group Les Baroques . Tee Set founded their own record label Tee-Set Records in order to keep the rights in their own hands. After a while, Boekhoorn was replaced by Peter Seilberger.

The return of Hans van Eijck in 1969 ushered in a phase in which Tee Set was slowly being transformed into a pop music group that played more catchy songs. In the area of members there were still changes: Dihl Bennink became the new guitarist and Herman van Boeyen is the drummer for some time as the successor to Blom.

The biggest hit in the band's history was released in 1969 with Ma Belle Amie . The single rose to fifth in the United States in the spring of 1970. Bennink was replaced by Ferry Lever, who also came from After Tea. The only track that reached number one on the hit parade is on the following long-playing record, The Morning Of My Days : She Likes Weeds . Max Spangenberg, the new drummer, was there. The play was initially banned in the United States because it appeared to be related to the use of drugs. The title, however, comes from the 1965 feature film The Ipcress File .

Tee Set had a permanent cast between 1970 and 1975. In 1975 Lever was replaced as guitarist by Polle Eduard, but the band did not deliver any more hits. It wasn't until 1979 that there was another hit with the piece Linda Linda , but after that the group was quiet for four years and the members went their own way.

Since 1983 Tee Set has been performing again for a few years, with front man Peter Tetteroo and a changing line-up. There are no new hits, but the group regularly plays at festivals during this time. Tetteroo died on September 9, 2002 at the age of 55.

Individual evidence

  1. Romeyn is no longer mentioned on the cover of the single Don't You Leave , but Fenwick can be seen in a film clip of the piece on the pop show Moef Ga Ga .
  2. Dihl, also written as Dill Bennink, was the brother of Leo Bennink, who in turn was a member of the JayJays and The Motion .
