The Associates , also called The Associates , were a British post-punk band in the 1980s and were founded in Edinburgh by singers Billy Mackenzie and Alan Rankine (guitar, keyboards) . They had their greatest successes in 1982 when they placed in the British Top 40 with the singles Party Fears Two , 18 Carat Love Affair and Club Country as well as the album Sulk . Billy Mackenzie died of a medication overdose in 1997 at the age of 39.

history

In 1976 Billy MacKenzie met Alan Rankine. In 1979 they released their first single under the name Associates , a cover version of David Bowie's hit Boys Keep Swinging . In 1980 drummer John Murphy and bassist Michael Dempsey joined the band. Dempsey previously played with The Cure , who were also on tour with the Fiction label and with the Associates.

"I think they're great - I think they're better than us."

"I think they are great - I think they are better than us."

- Michael Dempsey of The Cure on The Associates (1979)

The band reached its peak in 1982 when they reached the UK Top 10 with the single Party Fears Two and the album Sulk . But before the Sulk tour , Rankine left the band because of differences with MacKenzie. Dempsey and Murphy also turned their backs on the Associates that same year . Rankine released three solo albums from 1986 to 1989. MacKenzie worked with various musicians until 1990 under the name Associates ; however, there were no great successes. The band was disbanded in 1990 and MacKenzie devoted himself to other projects and his solo career. In 1993 Rankine and MacKenzie produced some demo recordings again, but the band did not reunite.
