Life

Edward Holland grew up in Albany as the son of Henry Holland (1661-1736) and Jenny Seeley (1676-1756) from Ireland. His father was an English officer and then became, among other things, police chief (sheriff) of Albany. Edward also joined the military, although he was only part of the active service in this role. On the side he also did chores for his father. In the mid-1720s he was also active in the trade together with the latter. In 1726 he married Magdalena Bayeux, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. After her death in 1737, he married Frances Nicoll (1704–1787), a granddaughter of Matthias Nicholls , a former mayor of New York City , in 1739 .

With his commercial success, so too did his political influence. Between 1728 and 1733 Holland was a member of Albany City Council. He was also one of the Commissioners of Indian Affairs. In 1733 he was appointed Mayor of Albany City. He held this office until 1741. During this time, a treaty was concluded with the Indians to cede land to the British settlers. After the end of his time as Mayor of Albany, Edward Holland expanded his trading company. He moved his company headquarters to Manhattan . At that time he was the owner of several merchant ships. His reputation and prosperity also grew in New York City. In 1747 he was appointed the city's new mayor. He held this office until his death. To date, Holland is the only person who was both mayors of Albany and New York City. He was also appointed to the Advisory Board to the Colonial Governor of New York Province and was a member of the New York Court of Chancery , the colony's highest court. Edward Holland died on November 10, 1756 in New York City. He was initially buried there. His burial site was later moved to Albany.
