The Société de l'histoire de France (SHF) (“Society for the History of France”) is a French learned society founded in 1833 . Founded as a private organization by François Guizot , then Minister for Public Education, it was supposed to revive the research on the national history of France, which had come to a standstill after the French Revolution .

The 1851 by Napoleon III. Declared a non-profit society was primarily intended to publish texts and documents on the national history of France and, if necessary, to translate them. Originally limited to research prior to the establishment of the Estates General in 1789 , the scope of responsibility was expanded through the integration of the Société d'histoire contemporaine in 1927 and now encompasses all of French history up to the present day.

Membership is open to specialists and amateurs from home and abroad alike. The number of members is unlimited. Admission takes place at the suggestion of a member by the Society's Council. This council consists of 40 elected members of the society and comprises a president, an honorary president and two vice-presidents, as well as a secretary and his deputy, an archivist and a treasurer. All members of the council, with the exception of the honorary president, are appointed for a quarter of a year. The council meets monthly and determines, among other things, the works to be published and names the authors to be entrusted with this.

The publications published by the society to date include more than 500 titles - in the first 18 years alone it published around 50 volumes with a total volume of around 20,000 pages, financed from the membership fees of its then around 200 members and a small grant from the Ministry of Education. In the 19th century, the Société de l'histoire de France was one of the three most important institutions of historical research in France, alongside the École nationale des chartes and the École pratique des hautes études, which was only founded in 1868 . It has published an annuaire bulletin de la Société de l'Histoire de France every year since 1863 - previously the annuaire and bulletin were separate publication organs. Society meetings are held twice a year, and colloquia are also held.
