Imelda Mary Philomena Bernadette Staunton , CBE (born January 9, 1956 in London ) is a British actress .

life and career

Staunton was born in London in 1956, the only child of Irish immigrants. While attending La Sainte Union Convent School in Camden , she appeared on the stage of the school theater for the first time in John Gay 's Beggar Opera . She decided to become an actress and, with friends, started writing her own play called The Corsythe Saga . During its performance, she was discovered by a language trainer who gave her lessons with the consent of her parents. In 1973, 17-year-old Staunton was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , Britain's most prestigious drama school . After completing her studies, she played for six years on various provincial theaters in travesties , Greek tragedies and musicals . Since 1982 she worked at London's National Theater , where she met her fellow actor Jim Carter . The couple married in 1985. Their daughter was born in 1993.

At just 29, Staunton won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in A Chorus of Disapproval and The Corn is Green . As an established stage star in the West End , she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1986 to 1988 and once again earned wide critical acclaim (her leading roles in Uncle Vanya and The Wizard of Oz were nominated for two other Laurence Olivier Awards in 1988). After Stephen Sondheim's Ab in den Wald established itself as the musical hit of the season in 1990 , she was rewarded with a second Olivier for Best Actress in a Musical .

After Staunton had appeared in smaller roles on television and cinema since 1987, she became known nationwide through her leading role in the television series Up the Garden Path and made as a supporting actress in hit movies such as Antonia & Jane , Much Ado About Nothing , Sense and Sensuality or Shakespeare in Love attracts attention.

In addition to Staunton's work as a busy film actress, she continued to enjoy success on stage: her starring role in Richard Eyre's 1996 production of Guys and Dolls earned her a fifth nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award , and just a year later she starred in Sam Mendes ' Habeas Corpus next to Jim Broadbent . She also toured with a big band from London to New York City. She then appeared in Yasmina Reza's Three Times Life and in the stage hit Calico . She also appeared in the films Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 as Dolores Umbridge .

Staunton had her greatest success on screen to date with Mike Leigh's Vera Drake , which premiered at the 2004 Venice Film Festival .

From March to September 2012 she was Mrs. Lovett in the musical Sweeney Todd at London's Adelphi Theater on stage.

Awards

For her role as Vera Drake , Staunton received the award for best actress at the Venice Film Festival. For this role she received additional trophies from film critics from Chicago , London , Los Angeles , New York City , San Diego , Seattle , Toronto and Vancouver .

Staunton has received the BAFTA , the Chlotrudis Award and the European Film Prize. In addition, she was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar in 2005.
