Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 is the final film in the Harry Potter series and is based on the final fourteen chapters of Joanne K. Rowling's book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows . It was produced together with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 , but, unlike this one, can also be seen in 3D . The film had its world premiere in London on July 7, 2011. It was released in Austria and Germany on July 13 and in the United States on July 15, 2011. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards.

action

The film begins with the last scene of the previous film , in which Lord Voldemort breaks into the grave of the late Albus Dumbledore and steals the mighty elder wand. Headmaster of Hogwarts is now Severus Snape , who apparently had betrayed and murdered Dumbledore.

Harry Potter , Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are in Shell Cottage, the home of Ron's brother Bill. Harry intends to break into the Gringotts bank with the help of the goblin Griphook and find a Horcrux there, which is in the dungeon of Bellatrix Lestrange , for which he would receive the sword from Gryffindor in gratitude, although Bill warns him that goblins do not do business always to be trusted. Despite numerous defensive measures, they manage to get there. Here you will find Helga Hufflepuff's goblet, which Harry recognizes as a Horcrux. After Harry stole the goblet, Griphook takes Gryffindor's sword, which can be used to destroy Horcruxes, and leaves the three of them alone in the dungeon, as he promised them to come in but not out again. On the back of a dragon guarding the dungeons, Harry, Ron and Hermione escape the advancing guards. When Voldemort learns that the Horcrux has been stolen, he murders all Gringotts employees, including Griphook, in revenge. The sword of Gryffindor then dissolves into nothing. Harry, who witnessed the event through a vision, sees himself confirmed in his assumption that another Horcrux must be hidden at Hogwarts. Harry, Hermione and Ron then Apparate to the wizarding village of Hogsmeade . Dumbledore's brother Aberforth hides them in his house from the incoming Death Eaters and shows them a new secret passage into the Room of Requirement at Hogwarts, which has become a haven for rebellious students.

Headmaster Snape learns of Harry's appearance, thereupon gathers all students in the great hall and threatens them with punishment if they do not reveal Harry's whereabouts or if they cooperate with him. Then Harry turns himself in. He asks Snape to report to the students who killed Dumbledore. The members of the Order of the Phoenix, with Ron and Hermione at their side, appear. The headmaster escapes after a brief fight with Professor McGonagall . At the same time, the Carrows, who also belong to the teaching staff, are switched off. McGonagall immediately takes control of Hogwarts and, together with the other Heads of House, takes care of the temporary protection of the school. So she brings the warrior statues in the castle to life and the teaching staff conjures up a protective dome over the castle.

Meanwhile, Harry is looking for Rowena Ravenclaw's missing diadem , which he suspects is another Horcrux. Following Luna's advice, Harry interrogates the ghost of Ravenclaw, the Gray Lady , who turns out to be Ravenclaw's daughter Helena. From her he learns that the Horcrux he is looking for is in the room of wishes . Meanwhile, Ron and Hermione enter the Chamber of Secrets to retrieve a tooth from the dead basilisk. With it they pierce the goblet stolen from Gringotts and destroy the Horcrux, whereupon they embrace and kiss. Voldemort, painfully feeling the loss of another part of his soul, rears up and destroys the school's protective shield. The battle between the Death Eaters and the defenders of Hogwarts begins.

Meanwhile, Draco Malfoy , Gregory Goyle and Blaise Zabini have followed Harry into the Room of Requirement and confronted him. Malfoy hesitates and so Ron and Hermione come to Harry's aid just in time. In battle, Goyle lights a demon fire and burns himself in. Harry, Ron, and Hermione flee on flying brooms, but Harry decides to turn back and save Malfoy and Zabini from the flames. Harry also pierces the diadem with a basilisk tooth, and Ron kicks it into the ablaze room to destroy the Horcrux for good.

In the meantime, the fighting has seriously damaged the school and numerous wizards and witches have died. When the three return to the Great Hall, they recognize Lupine , Tonks and Ron's brother Fred among the fallen .

Since the Elder Wand opposes Voldemort, Voldemort suspects that Snape became the rightful owner of the wand through the murder of Dumbledore. To ensure the obedience of the Elder Wand, he calls Snape to the Hogwarts boathouse, immobilizes him with a spell, and lets his snake Nagini loose on him. After Voldemort leaves the boathouse, Harry, Ron and Hermione find the dying Snape and capture his memories in the form of a train of thought. In the Pensieve thus more puzzle-solving: Snape Harry's mother Lily loved since childhood and was since she was killed by Voldemort on the side of Dumbledore. Snape's murder of Dumbledore took place at Dumbledore's request, as he was doomed to death anyway by the evil curse from Marvolo Gaunt's ring and Snape was thus able to prove his alleged loyalty to Voldemort. Harry also learns that he is a Horcrux himself and that he must therefore let himself be killed by Voldemort in order to defeat him.

Voldemort stops the attack on Hogwarts and tells Harry to face him. On the way to the Forbidden Forest , Harry meets Ron and Hermione, whom he says goodbye to. From the stone of the resurrection , hidden in a snitch , the shapes of Harry's parents, Sirius Black and Remus Lupine, appear, from whom he receives encouragement for his last walk. He enters a clearing and lets himself be killed by Voldemort without resistance. Instead of dying, Harry finds himself in a kind of in-between world resembling King's Cross train station and discovers a misshapen creature resembling Voldemort under a bench. Dumbledore, who then appears from behind, explains that Harry could not help this. A conversation takes place between him and Harry, in which he tells him the story of how enthusiastic he was about Grindelwald at the time and how Ariana's death was a terrible accident. Dumbledore explains to him that Voldemort only destroyed his own soul fragment with the killing curse, which was in Harry. Harry has the choice to die by simply waiting for the next train and just continuing on with it or returning to the living. When he regains consciousness, Voldemort orders Narcissa Malfoy to examine him. Although she realizes that Harry is alive, she declares him dead after he has confirmed with a low whisper that her son Draco is also alive. Voldemort triumphantly returns to the castle with his Death Eaters. Hagrid has to carry Harry, who is believed to be dead. In the schoolyard, Voldemort urges the Hogwarts defenders to join him as he won on Harry's death. Only Draco Malfoy, after initial hesitation, goes to his parents, who begged him to come on their side. Neville confronts Voldemort with an appeal that Harry's death should not have been in vain. This brave act enables him to pull the sword of Gryffindor out of the Sorting Hat . When Harry turns out to be alive, the fight breaks out again. Numerous Death Eaters then flee and the Malfoys leave the area over the bridge, because they simply didn't want to have anything to do with all this and actually only acted out of fear.

In the courtyard of the castle there is the final duel between Voldemort and Harry and a final fight between students, teachers, members of the order and Death Eaters, in which Molly Weasley kills Bellatrix Lestrange. Eventually, Neville Nagini , Voldemort's last Horcrux, chops off the head with the Gryffindor sword, saving Ron and Hermione's lives as the snake was about to bite. Now it turns out that Voldemort is in error with his murder of Snape. Not Snape, but Draco Malfoy had already defeated the previous owner of the Elder Wand - Albus Dumbledore - by disarming him. Since Harry was later able to disarm Draco in the Malfoy home, he is the current master of the elder wand. When Voldemort attacks Harry with the Elder Wand, Harry turns against Voldemort. Due to his own killing curse bouncing back on him, Voldemort dies and dissolves in ashes. Harry breaks the Elder Wand and throws it away so that no one can abuse its power.

19 years later, new students take their families to platform 9¾ at King's Cross Station in London . Harry, who is now married to Ginny Weasley, Ron and Hermione and the refined Draco Malfoy, each with their children, meet again on the Hogwarts Express. Harry's youngest son, Albus Severus, is concerned that he might be assigned to House Slytherin, but Harry assures him that this would not be a bad luck and that the Sorting Hat will surely take his request into account.

Financial success

The three main actors at the premiere of the film

In the first four days, around 1,580,000 visitors in Germany went to the cinema to see the last part of the seventh volume.

In 2011, the film saw 6.5 million visitors in German cinemas.

The eighth film in the Harry Potter series has also broken several records: around 483 million US dollars were grossed worldwide on the opening weekend. 93 million of them on the first day alone. The movie also hit the $ 100 million mark in two days and the $ 160 million mark in three days. In addition, it reached the one billion dollar mark, even before Avatar - Departure for Pandora , in a record time of 19 days.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 is the financially most successful film in the Harry Potter series and of 2011 at around $ 1.342 billion . It ranks 12th (as of August 8, 2020) among the most successful films of all time .

production

The production of the seventh and eighth films took place at the same time. The regular "Harry Potter" filming ended in June 2010 with recordings for the first part of the finale. Parts of the epilogue were re-recorded in December 2010 at Leavesden Studios.

No older actors were cast for the final scene, in which the protagonists accompany their children to the train to Hogwarts 19 years after the main storyline. The original cast played the scenes, which were then digitally reworked to make the actors look older.

Scenes with Luke Newberry as Teddy Lupine were recorded but cut from the theatrical version.

Daniel Radcliffe's stunt double David Holmes was injured during filming in January 2009 and is now dependent on a wheelchair.

During the filming of the fight scenes there was an incident in March 2010 in which a fire spread uncontrollably and destroyed parts of the scenery before it could be put out by the fire department.

In contrast to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 , this film was not only released as a 2D, but also in a 3D version. Although both films were announced in 3D in the first trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the first part was not released as a 3D film due to the time pressure. Later, the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was converted into 3D and published on Blu-ray Disc.

In July 2009, Vincent Crabbe actor Jamie Waylett was sentenced to 120 hours of community service by a London court after a police check in April 2009 found marijuana in his car and several cannabis plants in his mother's home. His role was then removed from the film. So it is not Crabbe who kindles the big fire in the room of wishes and dies in the process, but Goyle ( Joshua Herdman ).

Soundtrack

The composer of the soundtracks of the first three films in the film series and "Hedwig's Theme", John Williams announced his intention to write the score for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 again. Director David Yates indicated a willingness to work with Williams, but due to other time commitments from Williams, the collaboration did not materialize.

During the production process for the soundtrack of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, director David Yates therefore offered the composer Alexandre Desplat the work on the soundtrack for the sequel. In November 2010, Desplat was officially announced by Warner Bros. Work on the soundtrack began in early 2011 and ended on May 27, 2011 with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Conrad Pope at Abbey Road Studios .

Desplat uses themes, some of which have been modified, from other composers in the film series. When the trio Harry, Ron and Hermione return to Hogwarts after a long absence, a modification of "Hedwig's Theme" is played, which was already used in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and was composed by John Williams. A modification of Nicholas Hooper's "The Kiss" from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and "Dumbledore's Farewell" from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is also used. The epilogue scene is set to music with “Leaving Hogwarts” and the credits with “Hedwig's Theme” from Williams' soundtrack to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone .

Regarding the use of Williams' Hedwig's Theme, Desplat said:

“Well, we all know there's one theme, which has become iconic, Hedwig's Theme from John Williams. This theme is crucial to the success of the story, and it would have been disrespectful and stupid for me not to use it at the crucial moments where we need to refer to these ten years of friendships that we've all had with these characters and kids, so Hedwig's theme does reoccur a lot more [than] in Part 1 where loss of innocence was the main theme of the film […]. "

“Well, we all know that there is one theme that has become iconic and that is Hedwig's Theme by John Williams. This topic is essential to the success of the story, and it would have struck me as silly and disrespectful not to use it for those crucial moments when we need to relate to our ten year friendship with the characters and children. That is why Hedwig's theme appears much more often [than] in part 1, where the loss of innocence was the main theme of the film [...] "

The trailer's soundtrack is from Immediate Music and is called Lords of the Realm . This soundtrack was also used in the main menu of the DVD for the film. Other soundtracks from the film's trailers include Glacial Supremacy and Absolute Anthropoid by Pfeifer Broz and Dragon's Demise by Brand X Music .

marketing

In 2010, two trailers for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows were released, which contained scenes from both parts. A first featurette relating only to the second part was shown on March 17, 2011 on ABC Family . In addition to short interview sequences with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, David Heyman, David Barron and David Yates, it contained insights into previously unseen scenes.

A first poster was posted on March 28, 2011, showing Harry and Voldemort staring at each other, the Elder Wand between them.

The first trailer for the film was released almost simultaneously in English, French and German on April 27th. On June 16, 2011, the second (and last) trailer was published in English and a week later in German.

The German free TV premiere of the film was on November 3, 2013 on RTL .

Differences from the book

Severus Snape's death is portrayed differently in the film than in the book. Instead of dying in the Howling Shack, he dies in the boathouse at Hogwarts, and Voldemort casts a spell on him in the movie before sending the snake out on him; in the book, Voldemort lets Snape kill him straight away. The fate of Lucius Malfoy also differs from the book, as does that of Lavender Brown. In the scene in which Harry meets Dumbledore in King's Cross, Harry is initially naked in the book. Later a cloak appears to him, which he puts on. Furthermore, in the book, Ron and Hermione do not kiss in the Chamber of Secrets, but when Ron realizes that the elves have been forgotten in the kitchen. The final battle between Harry and Voldemort also differs considerably from the one in the book: In the book, this takes place in the Great Hall and not outside in the courtyard. Voldemort does not dissolve into ashes in the book either, but falls dead to the ground and is then buried in the castle. After his triumph over Voldemort in the book, Harry is cheered by the students present, which is missing in the film. The ending of the Elder Wand is also different in the movie than it is in the book, where Harry only uses it to fix his old wand.

In the film, Blaise Zabini appears at Malfoy and Goyle's side in place of Crabbe in the Room of Requirement. In addition, Goyle ignites the demon fire instead of Crabbe and dies in it. The role of Vincent Crabbe was removed from the film adaptation of the seventh volume, as Crabbe actor Jamie Waylett had previously been convicted of drug possession of community service.
