James Potter
James Potter (* 1729 in County Tyrone , Ireland , United Kingdom ; † 1789 in Center County , Pennsylvania , USA ) was a general in the American Revolutionary War , farmer and politician.
Potter's family emigrated to America in 1741. James enlisted in the Pennsylvania Militia and in 1756 participated in the Kittanning Expedition during the Seven Years' War in North America . In civilian life, Potter was a farmer and supported the development of central Pennsylvania by European settlers. He also acquired extensive real estate himself, the Potter-Allison Farm , which goes back to him, has been a listed Historic District since 1977 . In 1776 he was a member of the Constituent Assembly of Pennsylvania. During the American Revolutionary War, Potter commanded the Northumberland militia in the battles of Trenton , Princeton , Brandywine and Germantown . In 1777 he was appointed Brigadier General and in 1782 Major General of the Militia.
After the British withdrew from Philadelphia , Potter was no longer involved in any major skirmishes and was able to devote himself to his lands and politics. From November 1781 to November 1782 he was Vice President (an office comparable to the later introduced Vice Governor ) of Pennsylvania. James Potter died in 1789 as a result of a construction accident.
Potter County was named after James Potter .
