British Academy Film Awards 2012
The 65th British Academy Film Awards ceremony took place on February 12, 2012 at the Royal Opera House , London . The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) film awards were presented in 24 categories. The event was hosted by British actor and presenter Stephen Fry , who had already assumed this role from 2001 to 2006.
The nominations for the British Academy Film Awards were announced on January 17, 2012. With a total of 12 nominations, the French silent film homage The Artist , which has already received three Golden Globe Awards , led the field of nominated films, which triumphed in seven categories (including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor - Jean Dujardin ). This was followed by Dame, König, As, Spion , a British adaptation of John le Carré 's spy novel of the same name , with eleven nominations and Martin Scorsese 's children's book adaptation, Hugo Cabret, with nine nominations. Dame, König, As, Spion won the awards for Best British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay, Hugo Cabret won the categories for sound and production design. Scorsese was not only nominated for Best Director (for Hugo Cabret ), but also for Best Documentary (for George Harrison - Living In The Material World about the musician George Harrison ). In addition, Scorsese was awarded the BAFTA Academy Fellowship , which honors the American filmmaker's life's work. The drama Die Eiserne Lady , a biopic about the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Best Actress - Meryl Streep , Best Mask) and the documentary Senna (Best Documentary, Best Editing) about the Brazilian Formula 1 racing driver of the same name won two further prizes (1960–1994)
Election procedure
For a nomination for the 65th British Academy Film Awards, all feature films that were released in the UK between January 1 and December 31, 2011 , or those with a planned release by February 10, 2010 by the distributor in advance, were considered Academy were presented. For short films and animated short films were special rules, only British productions have been approved for these categories. A total of 285 films met these conditions.
The British Academy Film Awards were presented in three ballots. After the first ballot, a longlist was published on January 6, 2012 for most of the categories, containing up to 15 candidates per category. From this longlist, which was led by Dame, König, Ace, Spion and Simon Curtis ' My Week with Marilyn with 16 entries each, the nominations were determined in the second ballot. With the exception of the categories of Best British Film, Best Non-English Language Film and Best Documentary, all BAFTA members were able to vote in all categories. The nominations were presented on January 17, 2012 by actors Daniel Radcliffe and Holliday Grainger .
In the final ballot, the individual chapters of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts voted on the candidates. All members were only able to vote in the four actor categories as well as in the categories Best Film, Best British Film, Best Non-English Language Film and Best Documentary.
