British Academy Film Awards 2003
The 56th British Academy Film Awards ceremony took place on February 23, 2003 at Odeon Leicester Square , London . The film awards of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) were awarded in 21 categories, plus three categories of honorary awards. The event was hosted by British actor and presenter Stephen Fry , who took on this role for the third year in a row.

Several films had entered the show as favorites and received ten or more nominations. Gangs of New York (12 nominations), Chicago (12), The Hours - From Eternity to Eternity (11) and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (10) could not win more than two film awards; Gangs of New York received only one award, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was also honored with the audience award. Winners tended to be outsiders, including Speak to Her with two awards for two nominations and Road to Perdition with two out of three possible awards. In the main categories Best Film and Best Director sat Roman Polański the pianist through.
