Thelma Schoonmaker
Thelma Schoonmaker (born January 3, 1940 in Algeria ) is an American film editor . She has worked for director Martin Scorsese for many years and has been responsible for editing all of his films since the 1980s . She has already received three Academy Awards for her work .
Life
The daughter of an American working for an oil company was born in Algeria, but spent her childhood in different countries, including Aruba . Schoonmaker initially wanted to be a diplomat and from 1957 attended courses and lectures at Cornell University , where she attended political science and Russian courses. One of these courses was led by Vladimir Nabokov . In 1961, she graduated from there and took tests for application to the State Department . Since she expressed her outrage over apartheid policies in South Africa and American foreign policy, the tests were unsuccessful. In response, Schoonmaker began taking art classes.
She saw an advertisement in The New York Times for an assistant editor position and successfully applied for it. She shortened films by François Truffaut , Jean-Luc Godard and Federico Fellini , among others , so that they were the right length for American television. She then attended a six-week editing course at New York University (NYU), where she met the young Martin Scorsese. In 1967 she edited his first film Who is knocking on my door? . It was Scorsese who introduced her to director Michael Powell . Schoonmaker married Powell, 35 years his senior, on May 19, 1984. They were married until Powell's death on February 19, 1990.
Schoonmaker has worked almost exclusively for Martin Scorsese since the early 1980s.
