The Irishman (English for "The Irishman") is an American crime - thriller by Martin Scorsese about the Bufalino family of the American Cosa Nostra associates hitman Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran and his involvement in the disappearance of union leader Jimmy Hoffa . The true crime report I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt , published in 2003, served as the template for Steven Zaillian's screenplay .

The film, financed by Netflix , was released worldwide via video-on-demand on Netflix on November 27, 2019, and was previously shown in isolated cinemas in the United States from November 1, 2019. In Germany there was a limited theatrical release from November 14, 2019. The film premiere took place on September 27, 2019 at the New York Film Festival .

action

Irish-born war veteran Frank Sheeran worked as a truck driver during the 1950s and improved his salary by illegally selling part of his meat load to the Mafia . This leads to Frank being accused of theft one day, represented by lawyer William "Bill" Bufalino and, thanks to his cleverness, acquitted. A little later, Bill Frank introduces his cousin Rosario "Russell" to Alberto Bufalino , the head of a mafia family active in northeast Pennsylvania .

Russell hires Frank to have jobs carried out for him, in which he does not shy away from violence and murder. Working for the Mafia, Frank gets a job as a bodyguard for union leader James Riddle "Jimmy" Hoffa , who is president of the Teamsters union with ties to the Mafia and who has trouble with aspiring Teamster member Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano , one senior member of the Genovese mafia family from New York City . Frank and Jimmy develop a deep friendship with each other over the years.

In the early 1960s, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy launched a legal campaign against the mafia infiltration of the unions. Hoffa was sentenced to a long prison term in 1964, which he actually had to serve after several years of delaying tactics. Before that, he installed Frank Edward Fitzsimmons , who was harmless from his point of view, as a placeholder at the head of the Teamsters. But Fitzsimmons gives the Mafia more leeway within the union and thus wins their support. At the same time, Hoffa's relationship with Provenzano, who is himself imprisoned for extortion, deteriorates. In 1971, Hoffa was finally released on a pardon from President Richard Nixon , and he was banned from participating in Teamsters' activities until 1980. Nevertheless, Hoffa forges plans to regain his power in the organized trade union world, which is why the concerned Mafia boss Bufalino warns him at a party held by Frank that the leadership of the "families" is dissatisfied with his behavior and issues him a warning. Hoffa himself considers himself inviolable, however, as he secretly knows things about Bufalino and other Mafia bosses that they would expose and jail if anything should ever happen to him.

In 1975, Frank is informed by Russell that things have reached their breaking point with Hoffa and that his death has been decided. Frank goes to Detroit , where Hoffa's murder is to be carried out. Hoffa, who has planned a meeting with Provenzano and Anthony "Tony Jack" Giacalone of the local Zerilli mafia family at a local diner , is surprised that Frank can alternate with Hoffa's stepson Charles "Chuckie" O'Brien and the Genovese family Associate gangster Salvatore "Sal" Briguglio pulls up in a car. Briguglio tells Hoffa that the meeting has been moved to a local house and that Provenzano and Bufalino are waiting for him there. Upon entering the house, Hoffa sees that there is suspiciously nobody else in the house, whereupon he is shot by Frank.

Frank, Russell, Provenzano and others are eventually sentenced to long prison terms, but only on charges unrelated to Hoffa's murder. While one by one dies in prison, Frank is finally released from prison and placed in an old people's home. His attempt to get closer to his disappointed daughters after his release remains in vain, and Frank gradually begins to prepare for his death, which will be mourned by few people after the estrangement of his family.

production

Martin Scorsese planned for a long time to implement the novel with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. The project has been mentioned again and again since 2008 and in 2010 it was confirmed that Robert De Niro would appear in front of the camera for the first time since Casino (1995) in a Scorsese film.

In 2012, De Niro proposed Al Pacino for the role of the corrupt union leader Jimmy Hoffa , and Al Pacino also took part in a reading of the script. In September 2014, Al Pacino confirmed that Scorsese was working with him on the project and that it would be Scorsese's next film after Silence . De Niro and Pacino officially joined the cast in July 2017. Ray Romano , Bobby Cannavale and Harvey Keitel joined them over the next three months . Joe Pesci , who was already retired when production began, was reportedly offered the role of Russel Bufalino 50 times before he accepted the offer. In October 2017, the cast of Gary Basaraba , who plays President Frank Fitzsimmons of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters , was announced. Welker White plays Josephine "Jo" Hoffa, Jimmy's wife, Stephanie Kurtzuba Frank's wife Irene Sheeran and Kathrine Narducci Russell's wife Catherine "Carrie" Sciandra Bufalino. Anna Paquin took on the role of Irenes and Frank's daughter Peggy, played by Lucy Gallina as a child . Stephen Graham plays Hoffa's rival, crime boss Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano. Since the history of the film extends over a period of 30 or 60 years, for example in flashbacks by Frank Sheeran, some of the actors have been digitally rejuvenated. This was done through CGI effects from Industrial Light & Magic .

A start of production was announced for the first time in 2015. Filming was scheduled to start in 2016, but was then postponed. In May 2016 it was announced that Paramount Pictures had secured the film rights to the project. In February 2017, Paramount announced that the studio would no longer keep the rights to the film because the main funder, Fabrica de Cine, was no longer willing to fund the film. The reason for this was the steadily rising production costs of the project. Thereupon Netflix secured the film rights for 105 million US dollars .

After Paramount Pictures had given the publication rights to Netflix , there was a threat of a legal dispute with the company STX Entertainment , which had already acquired all rights for distribution outside the USA for 50 million US dollars in mid-2016 and then resold them to distributors in various countries.

In May 2017 it was announced that Netflix was able to come to an agreement behind the scenes with STX Entertainment and that production should finally start in August 2017. It was also stated that the film would only be shown briefly in a few US theaters to qualify for the Oscars , and that a comeback by Joe Pesci was still possible.

Filming for the film began in and around New York City in late August 2017 .

Deadline.com reported during the filming that Stephen Graham would play the role of a capo named Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano of the New York Genovese family , Domenick Lombardozzi the Genovese boss Anthony "Fat Tony" Salerno , and that Sopranos- Actress Kathrine Narducci will be seen in the role of the wife of Russell Bufalino.

On March 5, 2018, Scorsese announced that filming on the film had been completed.

The cost of producing the film is $ 159 million.

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MP (A) A , which corresponds to a rating of 17 years and over. In Germany the film is FSK 16 . The statement of reasons for the release states that the film contains a large number of scenes, some of which are clear, violence and killing. However, the deeds are not played out sensationally, and the life of the gangster is not glorified, but rather portrayed in a cool, distant manner.

Reviews

The film has so far won over 96 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.9 out of a possible 10 points.

Stephanie Zacharek of TIME Magazine writes that the film is so rich in detail and moves so gracefully through the many eras that it is difficult to make out a clearly defined plot. Nevertheless, the film is beautifully structured.

Owen Gleiberman of Variety explains The Irishman imagine life as a mobster is as a much unromantischere experience than it normally do films of this kind. The film is of masterly precision and delves deep into the interior of its subject, the dark heart of power. Films about the Italian underworld have always shown gangsters trying to separate family and business, but Frank's family barely appears on the radar in The Irishman except for his daughter Peggy. Robert De Niro's great performance reminds Gleiberman of his work in GoodFellas , and he plays Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran as a man who is both in the center and on the edge of the field, taking orders and responding. He plays him deadly serious as a man of great influence and complex loyalty. Al Pacino, on the other hand, plays Hoffa as an egomaniac who is also a brilliant tactician and has made himself a union leader and has a lot of passion in his speeches. Pacino turned Hoffa's inability to move or to compromise into a vitality spectacle of hubris, which was the actor's best performance in years, according to Gleiberman.

AO Scott of the New York Times writes that thanks to the work of film editor Thelma Schoonmaker , the film is long like a novel by Dostoevsky or Dreiser and dark like a painting by Rembrandt . What Martin Scorsese is interested in, what his works are mostly about, are not facts, but feelings: "Like many of his other films, The Irishman also spends some time depicting the power structures and rules of behavior that determine the respective part of reality," said Frank's time as a truck driver and as a soldier in World War II.
