Jerry Vale
Jerry Vale (born July 8, 1930 in Bronx , New York as Genaro Louis Vitaliano , † May 18, 2014 in Palm Desert , California ) was an American light music singer with Italian roots, who lived in the United States from the 1950s to the 1970s Was successful with his records for years.
Musical career
Vale's family had Italian ancestors; his father worked as an engineer for a mining company. At home his mother was a passionate singer who introduced her son to her wide repertoire of Italian folk songs. Vale sang these songs to the customers of the barber shop, where he cleaned their shoes when he was eleven. A little later his parents sent him to a music teacher, where he received singing lessons and learned to play the piano for four years. As a schoolboy, he began performing in New York nightclubs. When he made regular appearances at the New York Yonkers Club Del Rio at the age of 18 , he adopted the stage name Jerry Vale. In 1951 he met the singer Guy Mitchell know, who encouraged him to send his record company Columbia demo tapes. This came into the hands of then HR manager Mitch Miller , who was impressed by Vales tenor voice . He signed a recording deal with the 21-year-old, and that began Vale's impressive recording career at Columbia, which lasted an unusually long three decades.
On December 23, 1952, Vale recorded his first single . The included title You Can Never Give Me Back My Heart was his first record success; it made it into the Disk Jockeys Pic section of the music magazine Billboard in the spring of 1953 . In October 1953, he had taken with the Big Band of Harry James to Billy Strayhorn -Titel " Lush Life on". In early 1956, Vale heard Eddy Arnold 's country song You Don't Know Me in Boston . At his urging, Mitch Miller agreed to produce a cover version with Vale , which was released in May 1956 on Columbia single No. 40710. You Don't Know Me became Vale's greatest record success, reaching 14th place on the Billboard charts , and the single sold millions of times. By 1958, Vale had been able to place six titles in the charts. Then he had to go through a dry spell; only at the end of 1964 did he get back into the Billboard Hot 100 (24th place) with Have You Looked into Your Heart . He had another four successful titles by 1966, after which he, like many of his colleagues, had to pay tribute to the British Invasion and did not reach the Hot 100 until the end of his career. In the Adult Contemporary Charts , however, he still had one after 1996 Regular place, until 1971 he was listed there another 18 times, with the best listing fifth in 1967 for the title In the Back of My Heart . His last single with Columbia was released in 1974 after over 50 singles had appeared there. There are also more than 20 long-playing records, almost all of which were listed on the Billboard LP charts. The most successful LP was Christmas Greetings from Jerry Vale , which reached number 14 in the LP charts in 1964.
Vales record successes also earned him numerous television appearances, so he was a regular guest on the Ed Sullivan Show , as well as in the television shows of Johnny Carson and Mike Douglas . From 1978 onwards he appeared as a singer in several films, for example in the films Finger - Zärtlich und brutal (1978), Good Fellas - Three decades in the Mafia (1990) and Casino (1995), which were also widespread in Germany .
Vale's love of baseball was a particular highlight of his career . As a child he had played this sport on the streets of New York. He later bought the Florida minor league baseball club Daytona Beach Admirals. At the opening of the game, Vale sang the national anthem The Star-Spangled Banner , which was also pressed on record in 1963. This was awarded the gold record , which was issued in the Baseball Hall of Fame in New York.
In 2000, Vale published his autobiography entitled A Singer's Life . He died on May 18, 2014 at the age of 83 at his home in Palm Desert, California .
