Anthony "Fat Tony" Salerno (born May 1, 1911 in East Harlem , New York , † July 27, 1992 in Springfield , Missouri ) was a member of the US Cosa Nostra and head of the Genovese family in the 1980s. He usually wore a fedora and smoked a big cigar ; Because of his overweight he was nicknamed "Fat Tony".

Life

Salerno was born in East Harlem , where he grew up. He rose to the top of the Clan of the Genovese family in New York City , starting as a loan shark and thug. After the death of Frank Tieri in 1981 he became head of this family, but there was an informant ( Vincent Cafaro ) from his own ranks who only referred to him as a front man for Vincent Gigante , because "Fat Tony" was already considered seriously ill.

In 1984 the FBI recorded a conversation between "Fat Tony" and John "Peanuts" Trolone and " Teamsters " officials William J. McCarthy , Roy Williams and Jackie Presser . McCarthy said in this conversation that he needed the decision of a Mafia boss before he could move forward in the "Teamsters". And although the New York Times reported the conversation in 1988, McCarthy became president of the union in 1989.

In the course of the investigation against Paul Castellano , who could be wiretapped by the FBI in his villa, all persons identified as heads of the Five Families were arrested. However, Salerno - like Castellano - was released on February 27, 1985 after paying a $ 2 million bail . In 1987 Salerno was summoned to the " Mafia Commission Trial " on the basis of the RICO Act , which dealt with corruption between Cosa Nostra and the union.

"The Manhattan Cosa Nostra Trials in the summer of 1987 accuse the boss of the Genovese criminal family , Anthony Salerno, of manipulating the election of Presser (IHT. June 3, 1987). Three months earlier, police investigators had questioned the 72-year-old and sick predecessor Pressers, Roy L. Williams, in the health department of Springfield, Missouri State Prison, and learned details from him. "

Anthony Salerno was sentenced to a total of 100 years in prison. On July 29, 1992, he died of a heart attack at the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri. Salerno died alone as family members were not allowed to visit him. He was buried in Saint Raymond's Cemetery , Throgs Neck , Bronx.
