Marie Behncke

Marie Helene Wilhelmine Behncke , b. Rosenbohm, called Carstens, (born February 21, 1880 in Dangastermoor ; † August 16, 1944 in Wilhelmshaven ) was a German politician of the ( SPD ) and a member of the Weimar National Assembly .

Life and work

Marie Behncke was born as the illegitimate daughter of the maid Wilhelmine Rosenbohm. Her mother later married the worker Carstens, whose name the daughter also adopted. She grew up in poor circumstances and after attending elementary school in Varel became a maid in Rüstringen and Wilhelmshaven. In 1902 she married the mechanical engineer Hermann Behncke (1878-1960) who was employed at the Imperial Shipyard . The couple had two sons. Both spouses were politically active and linked to social democracy . From 1914 to 1921 Behncke was a member of the district executive committee of the SPD and in 1920 co-founder of the workers' welfare in Rüstringen / Wilhelmshaven. After Paul Hug left the Weimar National Assembly and August Jordan refused to accept the mandate , she was a member of the National Assembly and the 1st Reichstag from August 7, 1919 to June 1920 . She was the first female parliamentarian from northwest Germany . In addition, in 1919 she ran for the state constitutional assembly in Oldenburg. However, this candidacy was unsuccessful, as was your candidacy for the 1920 Reichstag election . After the mysterious death of her two sons in 1927, she largely withdrew from political work.
