Sandy Powell (born April 7, 1960 in London ) is a British costume designer .

Life

Sandy Powell left the Central St Martins School of Art in London before graduation to work for the choreographer and dancer Lindsay Kemp. She came to film through director Derek Jarman . In 1986 they worked with Caravaggio for the first time, which was followed by other films. She received her first BAFTA and Oscar nominations in 1994 for her costume designs in Sally Potter's drama Orlando .

She was nominated for 14 Academy Awards from 1994 to 2019 . She won the Oscar for Best Costume in 1999 for Shakespeare in Love , in 2005 for Aviator and in 2010 for Victoria the Young Queen . She also received nine BAFTA nominations for Best Costumes and won the British Film Awards in 1999 for Velvet Goldmine and in 2010 for Victoria the Young Queen .

In 2011, Sandy Powell was appointed to the competition jury at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival .

As part of the presentation of the European Film Prize 2019 , she was awarded for The Favorite - Intrigue and Insanity in the Best Costume Design category.
