The Pope Must Die (original title: The Pope Must Die (t) ) is a British movie of the genre comedy from 1991. The director was Peter Richardson , the writer wrote Peter Richardson and Pete Richens . The main roles were played by Robbie Coltrane , Beverly D'Angelo and Herbert Lom .

The mafia wants its candidate, Cardinal Albini , to be elected Pope , but a deaf secretary writes down Albinizi . This is an unconventional priest who was an auto mechanic before going to a monastery because of an unhappy love for a US tourist.

Albinizi tracks down financial machinations behind which the mafia boss and arms dealer Vittorio Corelli is. He is dissatisfied that his daughter Luccia is messing with a rock musician and orders an attack on the music group. Only the musician Joe Don Dante survives seriously injured, his mother Veronica Dante turns to Albinizi. She reveals that he is Joe's father. Albinizi visits Joe in the hospital shortly before Joe dies. Corelli's daughter was also accidentally killed by the bomb. The killers make him believe that someone else is responsible for Luccia's death. Corelli hires her to kill his daughter's murderer. Albinizi learns that Corelli is also responsible for the bombing and has the Vatican Bank , which Corelli's people infiltrated, shut down. Corelli takes revenge by making the story of Albinizi's love public. Albinizi abdicates and leaves the Vatican .

It turns out that no Cardinal Albini exists; Corelli, however, wants to be elected Pope under this code name. Shortly before the enthronement he shoots one of the cardinals. Albinizi gives the man absolution , at this moment the dying cardinal is called by his partner. Albinizi prevents the enthronement at the last moment, Corelli pulls out his weapon and shoots into the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel . The gangster is killed by a piece of plaster from the ceiling. A nun is elected the new Pope, she distributes the wealth of the Vatican to the poor. Albinizi marries Veronica and they have twins.

After protests from church circles, the original title had to be changed to "The Pope Must Diet" (The Pope must lose weight).
