Learning to Drive - Driving Lessons for Life (Original title: Learning to Drive ) is an American comedy film from 2014 . Directed by Isabel Coixet and written by Sarah Kernochan . The film premiered on September 9, 2014 at the Toronto International Film Festival . The German theatrical release was on August 6, 2015.

The New Yorker Wendy is left by her husband Ted. Her daughter Tasha works temporarily on a farm and is enthusiastic about country life. She wants her mother to visit her; but this one has no driver's license.

Darwan is an Indian Sikh and works in New York as a taxi driver and driving school instructor because he is allowed to wear a beard and turban in these two professions. In India, from which he had to flee, he was a professor. Gradually and sensitively, he teaches Wendy how to use the car properly. At first there were setbacks when his learner driver brakes abruptly during a thunderstorm and the following vehicle collides with the driving school car. Wendy's first attempt at the driver's license test also ended after 50 meters. Nevertheless, Wendy decides to continue.

At the same time there is a narrative thread about Darwan's marriage. His sister has chosen a woman for him named Jasleen. Darwan picks her up at the airport shortly after the rear-end collision happened. The wedding is the next day. However, it turns out that Jasleen is not very educated and does not dare to go out on the streets in the strange city. It spices too much when cooked. But Darwan is patient. One day Jasleen meets another Indian woman in a drugstore and when Darwan comes home from work in the evening, Jasleen is in a good mood with six other women in the living room.

Meanwhile, Wendy has got her driver's license. Together with Darwan, she goes to a car dealer and buys a car, which she soon drives to visit her daughter.

The film received mostly mixed reviews. At Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 57/100 based on 18 reviews, while at Rotten Tomatoes 64 percent of the 42 reviews were positive.
