Mark Stetson

Mark A. Stetson (* 1952 ) is an American special effects artist who received the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 2002 for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring .

Life

Stetson attended Massachusetts Bay Community College from 1969 to 1971. He then studied from 1972 to 1974 at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut and from 1975 to 1978 at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena industrial design. After graduating, he trained as an industrial model maker at General Electric in Bridgeport for a year . In 1979 he worked for Star Trek: The Film for the first time as a model builder for the film industry. It was followed by The Rattlesnake and Blade Runner . In the 1980s he worked on various projects as head of model construction. During this time he also worked for Boss Film Studios on films such as Die Hard and Vibes - The Psychic Hunt for the Glowing Pyramid . In 1985 he was for 2010: The Year We Make Contact for the Oscar in the category Best Visual Effects nomination.

After leaving Boss Film Studios in 1989, he founded his own model construction company with Stetson Visual Services , with which he worked on films such as Total Recall , Batman's Return and True Lies . In 1995 he closed his company and from July 1995 worked as a VFX Supervisor at Digital Domain for Das fifth Element . In the following years he worked for various companies specializing in visual effects such as New Line Pictures , Century Fox , Disney and Sony Pictures Imageworks . In 2002 he received the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, along with Jim Rygiel , Randall William Cook and Richard Taylor . Another nomination earned him in 2007 Superman Returns . Since 2010 he has been working at Zoic Studios as head of the film department.
