Friends with Benefits (Original Title: Friends with Benefits ) is an American romantic comedy directed by Will Gluck . The film was released on July 22, 2011 in the United States and Canada. The start of Germany was on September 8, 2011. The filming locations were New York City and Los Angeles . The film was nominated twice for the Teen Choice Award .

action

The New York headhunter Jamie mediates the art director Dylan from Los Angeles to the GQ . For Dylan to take the job, she has to convince him that New York is a great city. When she finally shows him a flash mob in Times Square , he accepts.

Since Dylan has no friends in New York, he befriends Jamie. They find that both of them lack sex, but they don't want to have feelings or a relationship because they have had bad experiences in it in the past. So the two of them decide to just have a sex relationship . However, Jamie ends this arrangement after a while, because she wants a real relationship. She gets to know the doctor Parker and explains to him that she has a "five date rule". that is, that she can only sleep with him after the fifth date. But when she sleeps with Parker after the fifth date and he hastily leaves the apartment the next morning, she ends the relationship again.

Dylan takes Jamie to his family in Los Angeles for the holidays. His father has Alzheimer's disease , which affects him hard. Jamie and Dylan have sex again there, but both feelings develop. Jamie overhears Dylan telling his sister Annie that he thinks Jamie is "crazy" and doesn't feel anything for her, which is why she flies back to New York that night. Jamie breaks off contact, the friendship falls apart.

Dylan's father "opens" his eyes by telling him not to let the right one go. Dylan realizes that he really loves Jamie. He organizes a flash mob in Grand Central Station and wants her as a boyfriend. Jamie agrees on the condition that he kisses her. In the last scene, the two have their “first date” in a 24-hour snack bar across from the train station, where they kiss again.

Trivia

Emma Stone made a cameo as Dylan's girlfriend at the beginning of the film . In the scene in which Jamie picks Dylan up from the airport, she meets the name O. Penderghast , which is a reference to the film role Olive Penderghast by Emma Stone in Easy to Get . In addition to Emma Stone, the Lonely Island singer Andy Samberg , who plays Jamie's friend at the beginning, can be seen in the same scene .

Other film references are that Dylan only knows New York from Seinfeld and Jamie angrily shouts "Shut up Katherine Heigl , you damn liar!" After a failed relationship while looking at posters at The Naked Truth . At the beginning, Jamie and Dylan say they want "like George Clooney " to forego feelings in the future.

A running gag is that Dylan tries to convince his fellow travelers on every flight in the film that the ditching of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River was mainly due to the technology in the plane. His fellow travelers, on the other hand, only show incomprehension because they undoubtedly consider the flight pilot a hero. Shortly after returning from Los Angeles, Jamie also calls up the Wikipedia article on Chesley Sullenberger , the pilot of that flight. Sullenberger makes a cameo as a security guard who evicts Dylan from the roof of a skyscraper.

Another running gag is the repeated appearance of a carriage : First, Jamie and Dylan see in a romance film how a man confesses his love to a woman and the two then drive away in a carriage. Jamie raves that this is "awesome". When Jamie's mother talks to Jamie in the park, she says that Jamie's dream prince would not kidnap her in a horse-drawn carriage and that Jamie does not even want to, while a carriage drives past the park in the background. After the flash mob in Grand Central Terminal, a carriage is parked in front of the train station. Jamie asks Dylan if he also ordered this, which he says yes, but says that it is not for her. Jamie is relieved because her horses scare her.

Also in the love story Jamie and Dylan see, Hey, Soul Sister by Train is played at the end . Dylan comments that this "absurdly brisk pop song that has nothing to do with the rest of the movie" was added just to convince the viewer that "you had a blast with this shitty movie". The scene at the end of the film where Jamie and Dylan leave Grand Central Station is also highlighted with Hey, Soul Sister .

In the same year a film with a very similar focus, Friendship Plus, was released .
