Janelle Monáe (* 1. December 1985 in Kansas City , Kansas as Janelle Monáe Robinson ) is an American Soul - and radio - singer , songwriter , actress and dancer .

Life

Janelle Monáe was born in Kansas City to a truck driver and a caretaker. Monáe left her native Kansas City to study acting at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York. Instead of pursuing a career as an actress, she focused on music and, after moving to Atlanta, founded the Wondaland Arts Society .

In 2007 she published her first solo work Metropolis . Shortly thereafter, she was signed by Sean "Diddy" Combs and his label Bad Boy Records . On the new label, the album was re-released in the same year with the title Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition) and two new songs. The album made it into the US album charts and reached number 2 on the Heatseeker charts. Her single Many Moons brought her a Grammy nomination in the category "Best Urban / Alternative Performance" in 2009 .

On May 18, 2010, her album The ArchAndroid was released by Wondaland Arts Society. The album is the continuation of Metropolis and follows on with Suites 2 and 3. Both publications are based on a common concept. Monáe's alter ego - Cindi Mayweather - is the messianic protagonist of a fantastic story in the android city of Metropolis. Monáe has announced that he will make a video for each of the songs on The ArchAndroid . The title of the album and the name of the fantasy city is a reference to the film Metropolis by Fritz Lang . Her second studio album was critically acclaimed and described as a landmark R&B work. The company Metacritic calculated a total score of 91.

In September 2013 her album The Electric Lady was released , on which Prince participated as a guest musician.

In 2016 she took on her first leading role in the feature film Hidden Figures - Unrecognized Heroines .

In 2017 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

Her third album, Dirty Computer , was released on April 27, 2018 .
