Harriet - The Path to Freedom (Original Title: Harriet ) is a historical film by Kasi Lemmons , which premiered in September 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released in US cinemas on November 1, 2019. The film was released in Germany on July 9, 2020. The biography tells the story of the most famous Afro-American escape helper Harriet Tubman , who herself escaped slavery . At the 2020 Academy Awards , Cynthia Erivo was nominated for best leading actress, and Stand Up was also nominated for best film song .

action

The slave Araminta Ross works as a picker on a plantation. As she is resting, her husband John, a free man, tells her that he has found a way to free her from slavery too. After the death of her owner, she fled to Pennsylvania. She is pursued by Gideon, the son of her former owner, who has fallen in love with Araminta, but she is determined never to be enslaved again, even if she has to die for it.

Biographical

Harriet Tubman was involved in the Underground Railroad aid organization

Harriet Tubman was the best-known African-American escape helper for the Underground Railroad aid organization , who helped runaway slaves from the southern states to the northern states of the USA or Canada from around 1849 until the end of the Civil War .

Tubman worked at Brodess Plantation, and after successfully escaping slavery herself in 1849 , she returned to the southern states several times under the code name of Moses . She played an important role during abolitionism and helped other slaves on their escape. During the Civil War, she worked alongside her work as a nurse and cook as a scout for the northern states, in her later years she was involved in the women's movement .

Tubman died on March 10, 1913, at the age of 93, of complications from pneumonia. Even though Tubman was largely forgotten after her death, she is now one of the well-known historical figures in the United States, to which numerous children's books published since the 1960s have contributed. After her death, Tubman was buried with military honors in Fort Hill Cemetery, Auburn.

In 2016, the Obama administration decided to show Tubman's likeness on a new $ 20 bill from 2020 . However, the Trump administration delayed this honor. In early 2019, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced that the final redesign decision had been postponed to 2026. A new law could therefore only be passed in 2028. Tubman would be the first woman and black person to appear on a banknote in the United States. Martha Washington already graced US money at the end of the 19th century, albeit a 1 dollar silver coin.

Tubman's involvement in the Underground Railroad was already the subject of the 1978 miniseries A Woman Called Moses by Cicely Tyson . A planned HBO adaptation of Kate Clifford Larson's 2004 book Bound for the Promised Land about Tubman, in which Viola Davis starred and the it was supposed to produce, however, was ultimately not realized.

production

Staff and cast

Focus Features announced the film project in September 2018. Directed by Kasi Lemmons , who is a professor at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and who also wrote the script with producer Gregory Allen Howard .

The Tony Award - Grammy - and Emmy -Preisträgerin Cynthia Erivo , a Nigerian British-born actress Ethnicity, took over the title role of Harriet Tubman . It is Erivo's first leading role in a film. In mid-September 2018, the cast of Leslie Odom Jr. and Joe Alwyn , who plays Gideon Brodess in the film, was announced, followed shortly afterwards by Omar J. Dorsey, Tory Kittles , Antonio J. Bell and Tim Guinee , who plays the Quaker Thomas Garrett , who Helped escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad escape to the Northern States.

Filming and equipment

The film was shot mainly in Virginia, so in Cumberland , Petersburg and Charles City , as well as in Powhatan County . The production team set up several backlots , i.e. outdoor sets that had previously been used as locations for earlier productions of miniseries such as John Adams - Freedom for America and films such as Lincoln . Lemmons said that this setting made for a particularly emotional shoot: "We shot on a plantation where around a thousand slaves once lived, suffered and many, many died." In autumn 2018, footage was taken in Mathews County , including Mathews instead of shooting at Williams Wharf and the 19th century dock. John Toll acted as cameraman, Warren Alan Young was responsible for the production design and Paul Tazewell for the costumes .

Film music, marketing and publishing

The film music is composed by Terence Blanchard . The soundtrack, which contains a total of 35 pieces of music, including the song Stand Up by Cynthia Erivo, which is also available as a single, was released on November 1, 2019 by Back Lot Music as a download and on CD. In the song Stand Up , Harriet describes how she leads her people to freedom armed with a gun. It is the title song of the film that is played in the credits.

A first trailer was presented on July 23, 2019. The film premiered on September 10, 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released in US theaters on November 1, 2019, where it was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . The cinema release in Germany took place on July 9, 2020.

Cynthia Erivo plays the title role of Harriet Tubman

Owen Gleiberman of Variety writes, like a number of other film critics, that Harriet Tubman was long overdue as a film heroine . The film tells a conscientious, edifying, and devoted version of her story, but when it comes to showing the audience the extraordinary thing about Harriet Tubman, not just illustrating what she's done, but letting us connect with her, that is Harriet a conventional film. This ultimately evolves into a kind of self-righteous western action film, which is about how to escape a group of slave hunters. Gleiberman further notes that when you look at photos of Harriet Tubman, they seem to be staring at you in an eerie way, with their relentlessly sinister face, which the British singer and actress Cynthia Erivo , who plays the title role, has an angry and sad eloquence expressing, communicating anger and fear as well as determination.

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter says the film tells a gripping story that is for the most part well told, but Harriet's frequent religious raptures, which make her look a bit like an invulnerable saint, reduced the central figure to a minimum. Harriet's involvement as an armed attack leader during the civil war also appears rushed, and the unprecedented importance she had in this military role, but also her subsequent commitment to women's suffrage , only becomes clear in the credits. Rooney also says that Erivo pointedly portray Harriet's selfless courage, which was the result of suffering, determination and anger, but he also notes that the strong tendency to use action scenes leaves too little room for character studies, especially that of Tubman, whom he calls describes an extraordinary figure with a unique place in American history.

Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian sees Harriet Tubman as a Spartacus of the American South, and in addition to its classification somewhere between a slave escape drama, an action thriller and a western, the film is in a certain way also a superhero film, which is a worthwhile genre mix, even if Kasi Lemmons are only different deal superficially with the agony and injustices that went with slavery. In this way, Tubman becomes a mythical figure that some plantation owners simply cannot believe is a black woman and therefore prefer to think that she must be a northern woman in black disguise. Lemmon's achievement is to tell a story that does not accept slavery as a tragic and immutable fact, but rather shows people who have taken action against it, Bradshaw said.

The film's revenues from theatrical screenings are $ 43.2 million.
