action

The pianist Romulus Ledbetter is a homeless man. He lives in a cave in a park and is plagued by delusions. So he believes Cornelius Gould Stuyvesant sends rays from the top of the Chrysler Building that make people submissive.

The opening scene shows Romulus quarreling with a law enforcement officer and several young people, who also abuse him. He escapes and walks past a poster that shows the famous photographer David Leppenraub and on which "Help me" was written.

The body of Scotty Gates is discovered near the cave on Valentine's Day . The authorities - including the daughter of the pianist Lulu - believe in the natural cause of death. Romulus Ledbetter is convinced by Matthew that Scotty Gates was murdered by the famous photographer David Leppenraub. He runs into Bob, who gives him a suit because of his skill at the piano. With the help of an old friend, he receives an invitation to a reception at Leppenraub's estate, where he is supposed to play the piano. After a tour of Leppen theft showroom, he is reinforced in his suspicion of Leppen theft. He also talks to Joey Peasley, Leppen's assistant, who confirms his suspicions.

During his performance he gets a paranoid attack and hastily leaves the festival. Arrived outside, there is an attack on him in which he is to be run over. This fails, and Romulus believes he recognizes a faceless man in the attacker, whom he regards as Stuyvesant's slave. The following night Romulus sleeps with Moira, Leppenraub's sister, and returns to his cave in New York the next morning.

He breaks into Leppenraub's farm unseen and searches its storage room, where he comes across a video showing Scotty being murdered by Leppenraub, and a cold room with meat hooks. While still on the farm, in Moira's room, he watches the video, but is surprised by Joey, who, however, promises to remain silent about his presence. Nevertheless, he is almost discovered by Leppen theft.

Ledbetter is attacked in front of his cave and forced to publish a video. To do this, he calls his daughter, supposedly to have her bring the video over. Once at the destination, Romulus starts digging for the video and finds one that he hands over to one of the two kidnappers. This video is the wrong one, however Lulu jumps. Rom's daughter emerges from behind a tree and opens fire, whereupon one of the two kidnappers is seriously injured. The other shoots his accomplice and flees. Romulus identifies the dead man as a drug dealer known to him.

Romulus receives the autopsy report on Scotty Gates from Lulu. He had previously learned from Matthew that Scotty had a branded heart on his bum, but found no comment in the report and remembers that the same was not seen in the video. He drives to Moira and asks her if she slept with Scotty, but receives a negative answer. However, Moira tells him something different about the heart, which the viewer only learns later.

The final scene shows Romulus and Leppen theft in the subway. Joey Peasley gets in, but doesn't notice Romulus for the time being. Leppenraub hands Joey a suitcase of money. Romulus makes himself noticeable and reveals that Joey shot the video himself and added snippets of lepping robbery to humiliate and blackmail him. He also accuses him of being the mastermind behind the attacks on himself because he foresaw how he would react. Ledbetter has a seizure and sinks to the floor. Joey notices that Romulus has no evidence to back up his theses. At the next train station, Matthew gets on and recognizes Joey, but believes he has Scotty in front of him. This makes it clear that Joey has posed as Scotty to Matthew, in the justified hope that he in turn would ask Romulus for help. Joey sees himself convicted and fires at Romulus once, but misses him. Then he is overwhelmed by the fellow travelers, who are plainclothes police officers.

You see Ledbetter and Leppenraub sitting in a bar. Romulus reveals that Moira told him there was a heart on Joey's butt, but not on Scotty's. Ledbetter meets his daughter, who invites him to live with his former wife and her, his daughter, which he refuses with thanks.

Romulus is also repeatedly plagued by the imaginary appearance of his wife in the course of the film.

Reviews

Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter magazine that the film was "absolutely fascinating," but would likely not work without Samuel L. Jackson.

The lexicon of international films praised the “brilliant” portrayal of Samuel L. Jackson and the “convincing” jazz film music. The “psychotic thrusts of the protagonist” are “less plausible”.
