Michael Anthony Thomas Charles Hall (born April 14, 1968 in West Roxbury , Massachusetts ) is an American actor and film producer .

Life

Anthony Hall is the son of a shopkeeper and a jazz musician. He grew up with his mother and lived alternately on the east and west coasts of the United States during his childhood. He has a half-sister named Mary Chestaro through his mother. He attended school in New York City . At the age of eight he was already active as a child actor and appeared in several commercials. This was also very much encouraged by his mother.

In 1980 he made his television debut in a television adaptation called The Gold Bug , in which he played the young Edgar Allan Poe . 1982 followed another role in the children's comedy Six Pack . A year later he was allowed to take on one of the bigger roles in The Shrill Four on the Move based on a script by John Hughes . The collaboration between Hall and Hughes then continued in the high school films That Can Only Be Adult (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985) and LISA (1985). The larger roles in these comedies made Hall known to a wide audience, but at the same time locked him in the role of the strange geek , not particularly popular with classmates . Hall was considered Hughes' alter ego on screen in the mid-1980s . He later turned down roles in other Hughes films such as Ferris Turns Blue in order to move away from the geek role model.

From 1985 to 1986, the then 17-year-old Hall was involved as a member of the television show Saturday Night Live . He's still the youngest cast member on Saturday Night Live . In 1986 he made his debut in the action genre in the film Hot Hell LA . However, the success of this film, in which he played an emphatically harder role, was not achieved. Originally he was supposed to take on the lead role in the war film Full Metal Jacket by Stanley Kubrick , but he got out of the project early and was replaced by Matthew Modine . The sports film Johnny be Good followed in 1988, but it was panned by the critics. In the 1980s, Hall was part of the Brat Pack , best known for their wild parties, and he made headlines towards the end of the decade with drinking problems that threatened his career.

In 1990 he impersonated the villain in Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands, which made a comeback for him. He then played primarily in a number of low-budget productions and television films. In 1994 he directed the movie Julius Caesar Superstar , in which he also played the lead role of an unsuccessful rock musician. However, the movie flopped and Hall stuck with acting. In 1999, he starred in the Emmy -nominated biography of Silicon Valley , the main role of Bill Gates . From 2002 to 2007 Hall took on the role of the main character Johnny Smith in the US series Dead Zone in all six seasons. He was also one of the producers of Dead Zone . In Christopher Nolan's film The Dark Knight (2008) Hall was seen in a minor supporting role as a television reporter. In 2013 he appeared as Red alongside Mickey Rourke and Danny Trejo for Roel Reiné's Western Dead in Tombstone .

In addition to acting, Hall has another passion for music. With his band Hall of Mirrors he has released an album Welcome to the Halls Of Mirrors . Hall has been engaged to actress Lucia Oskerova since 2019.
