You can only do that as an adult (Original title: Sixteen Candles ) is an American high school film from 1984 by John Hughes , who made his directorial debut with this film.
action
Samantha's sixteenth birthday. However, the tenth grader finds that her entire family has forgotten about the preparations for her sister Ginny's wedding, which is due to take place the following day. Frustrated, she goes to school, where she exchanges secret letters with her friend Randy, confessing that she is hopelessly in love with the older and seemingly unreachable Jake. By chance he receives her letter and begins to be interested in Samantha - also because Jake no longer satisfies his relationship with the beautiful Caroline who is only interested in parties and luxury. On the bus ride home, farmer Ted, a nerdy ninth grader, tries to polish up his image by getting closer to Samantha. Despite constant rejection, he asks her to come to the dance in the school gym in the evening.
Samantha's four grandparents have now arrived because of the wedding and block their room, but do not remember their birthday either. A couple of grandparents brought along the Chinese exchange student Long Duk Dong, who lives with them. To avoid her grandparents and Long, she decides to go to the dance - but she has to take Long with her, who within a short time finds a friend in the tall sportswoman Marlene. Samantha, on the other hand, continues to grapple with Ted at the ball, who made a bet with his friends that he will get a girl today. In the school's workshop, Samantha and Ted finally have a serious conversation in which she also talks about her love for Jake. Ted reports that Jake has just asked him about Samantha and suggests that she just talk to him. In gratitude, she gives Ted her panties so that he can win the bet against his friends.
Samantha tries to speak to Jake, but she can't utter a word - which he understands as a refusal. Finally she makes her way home. Since Jake's parents are away, his girlfriend Caroline uses the opportunity after the ball to have a big house party with enormous destructive power. Jake is more interested in finally speaking to Samantha and calls her late at night (only her grandparents are on the phone, who think the caller is a pervert). After the party ends, Jake tries to clean up the mess and finds Ted trapped under a table. The two start a conversation about Samantha and make an agreement: Ted has to give him Samantha's underpants so that he can give them back to her and her reputation is not ruined, but Ted can follow the very drunk Caroline in his father's Rolls-Royce Corniche Drive home. Ted stops at his friends Bryce and Wease's house so they can take a photo of him and Caroline as proof that the bet is won.
The next morning: Samantha's parents remembered that they forgot their birthday, but their daughter forgives them. Jake drives to Samantha's house, but only meets the still drunk Duk Dong, as the rest of the family has left for Ginny's wedding. The drunkenness and accent of Dong let Jake understand that Samantha is getting married today, and he rushes off to church. In front of the church he meets the kissing Caroline and Ted, who seem to have liked each other and spent the night in the Rolls-Royce. Jake and Caroline split amicably. At the end of the service, Samantha, very surprised, suddenly sees Jake standing in front of the church. In the evening, Samantha and Jake kiss over a birthday cake with 16 candles. Jake tells her to make a wish, but she replies that her wish has already been granted.

criticism

The critical consensus judges that the film is much more adult than most teen comedies and shows compassion and respect for its teenage characters. The film service agrees with this opinion and writes: "A puberty comedy told with a lot of humor and some depth, which is pleasantly different from the majority of this genre."
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of May 4, 1984 that Sixteen Candles was a “sweet and funny film”, the plot may not sound any better than the usual teen comedies, but which stood out from them through acting and directing: “He doesn't loathe his characters or be condescending like a lot of teenage films are; instead, he looks for a human comedy and finds it in the everyday life of the young people in his story. ”He particularly emphasized the scene between Samantha and Ted in the garage, where both characters turned out to be lonely and insecure. Ringwald is the "perfect center" of the story, while Paul Dooley, Blanche Baker and Gedde Watanabe offer "effective representations".
