Darlene Love (* 26 July 1941 in Los Angeles , California , actually Darlene Wright ) is an American singer and actress . She was best known as the interpreter of numerous songs by producer Phil Spector and in the role of Trish Murtaugh on the side of Danny Glover in all four Lethal Weapon films. In December 2010 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement .

career

Darlene Wright gained her first singing experience as a member of the church choir in her hometown of Hawthorne . In 1957 she helped out as a vocalist with the Echoes , later she became lead singer of the girl group The Blossoms. The trio released numerous singles, but mostly without any significant success. But thanks to Wright's distinctive voice, the Blossoms became a coveted ensemble that worked for Elvis Presley , Sam Cooke , Sonny & Cher and Tom Jones , among others .

They achieved their greatest hits under other names: In 1962, Phil Spector hired the Blossoms to record the song He's a Rebel . However, the single appeared under the name of the Crystals , another girl group supervised by Spector, which was on tour at the time of the record recording. He's A Rebel became the Crystals' biggest hit and reached number one on the American charts . The Crystals 'subsequent single, He's Sure The Boy I Love (# 11 in the US charts), was actually sung by the Blossoms, with Da Doo Ron Ron (# 3 in the US) they sang behind Crystals' singer LaLa Brooks the choir.

Spector also wanted to make Wright a star himself: he gave her the stage name Darlene Love (allegedly after the gospel singer Dorothy Love-Coates, whom he admired) and produced several solo recordings with her, including (Today I Met) The Boy I'm Going To Marry , a Top 40 hit, and Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) for the Christmas compilation A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector . The song was a flop as a single, but is now one of Love's most famous pieces.

Love was also part of the Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans group launched by Spector , which landed a top ten hit with Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah .

The Blossoms also worked as a background ensemble for Johnny Rivers and sang a.o. a. on his number one hit "Poor Side Of Town". From 1964 to 1966, the Blossoms were a permanent part of the influential rock and roll TV show Shindig! , in which they appeared mainly as the accompaniment of numerous prominent guests, but also performed their own songs. In 1968 they were hired as the choir for Elvis Presley's legendary TV show 68 Comeback Special , which heralded its comeback in the American charts.

In the 1970s, Love retired from the limelight for family reasons. In the eighties she appeared again, initially mainly in small clubs, later as the leading actress in the Broadway musical Leader Of The Pack , in which she played herself. Since 1986 she has been a regular guest of the pre-Christmas edition of Late Night with David Letterman , where she sings Christmas Baby Please Come Home . (A performance in 2007 had to be canceled due to the writers' strike in Hollywood.)

Love can also be seen in some movies: She plays Danny Glover's wife in all four Lethal Weapon films .

In 2008, Rolling Stone listed Love 84th of the 100 best singers of all time . In 2009 she was nominated for a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time, but did not make it into the final selection. She was nominated again in September 2010, and on December 15, 2010 the jury announced her acceptance.

Darlene Love was godmother (Godmother) of Whitney Houston .
