The Premiers is the name of a California band of Mexican immigrant children who played garage rock- style pop music in the 1960s . She is best known for her hit Farmer John from 1964.
history
In 1962, teenage brothers John and Lawrence Perez from San Gabriel , California decided to form a band. They brought in the neighboring boys George Delgado and Frank Zuniga and named the group "The Premiers". John played drums, Lawrence and George played guitar, and Frank played bass. They rehearsed in the Perez family's backyard and made their first appearances at family parties, weddings, and dance events. The mother of the Perez brothers made the manager Billy Cardenas, who already looked after several bands in the Los Angeles area , aware of the premiers. He improved their appearance and suggested they add the song Farmer John, written in 1959 by Don Harris and Dewey Terry, to their repertoire.
With this song Cardenas introduced the premieres of the small record company Faro, which was ready to release Farmer John on a single . Then Cardenas took over the production of the title, with John Perez and George Delgado taking over the vocals and girls from a car club in the background provided the party atmosphere. Faro released the record in April 1964, and the major record company Warner Bros. was offered a license for redistribution. Just a month later, Warner Bros. Farmer John released on the single No. 5443. The song turned out to be a hit that made it into the Hot 100 of the US music magazine Billboard . He was accepted there in June 1964 and rose to 19th place. At the same time, Warner Bros. produced a long-playing record with the premiers under the title Farmer John Live , which in addition to the successful title contained other recordings from the group's repertoire. The premiers then went on tour to the Midwest with Diana Ross , Gene Pitney and other stars. On a second tour through the southern United States, they were among other things the opening act for the Rolling Stones . A third tour led to New York together with the Dave Clark Five .
After two more singles remained unsuccessful, Warner Bros. ended the engagement with the Premiers, who brought out four singles at Faro until 1967. These too did not reach the hit lists. During the second tour, Frank Zuniga had to leave the group because he had been drafted into the Vietnam War . He was replaced by Billy Watson from the Rhythm Playboys. When Lawrence Perez also had to go to Vietnam in 1968, the premiers broke up.
