The Dave Clark Five (short form: DC5 ) was a British musical group that was successful in the mid-1960s. It was one of the few bands that could match the commercial success of the Beatles .

history

The Dave Clark Five consisted in their most successful line-up of Dave Clark (drums), Mike Smith (keyboard, vocals), Lenny Davidson (guitar), Rick Huxley (bass) and Denis Payton (saxophone).

The group had a number of hits including Glad All Over , which ousted the Beatles from number 1 on the UK charts in January 1964 . Characteristic of the band's early records were a tight rhythm and acoustically protruding drums. She was especially popular in the United States , where she played in sold-out venues and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show 18 times . In total, she was able to bring 24 recordings into the Billboard Top 100, including 17 top 40 hits between 1964 and 1967. With their title "Over And Over" they reached number 1 on the US single charts. But her records also sold well in her home country: eight top 10 hits and a total of 22 top 50 hits in the British charts bear witness to this.

After The Beatles released A Hard Day's Night in 1964 , The Dave Clark Five also recorded a film, Catch Us If You Can (1965, directed by John Boorman ). From 1967 onwards, the group's success in the USA waned, while they still had a few top ten hits in Great Britain. Musically, she returned to her roots with the 1969 LP The Dave Clark Five Play Good Old Rock & Roll , two of which were successful EPs, but broke up after she had another hit in the summer of 1970 with Jerry Keller's "Here Comes Summer" had up at the end of this year.

In December 2006 the former saxophonist Denis Payton passed away. On March 10, 2008, the Dave Clark Five was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Mike Smith died a few days before the ceremony on February 28, 2008. Smith had been paralyzed since falling in September 2003. As the third original member, Rick Huxley passed away on February 11, 2013 at the age of 72.
