The Rezillos is a punk band formed in Edinburgh in 1976 . The musicians are self-taught on their instruments. Influenced by glam rock, they often played cover versions, but also had their own hits that brought them into the top 20 of the British charts. The band broke up in December 1978, re-formed in 1979 under the changed name The Revillos and appeared again and again with a changing line-up until the mid-1990s until the members went their separate ways. Since 2001 the group appears again as The Rezillos . They have since played regularly in the UK, Europe and overseas. In 2015 her album Zero was released.

history

The Rezillos from 1976 to 1978

The Rezillos were formed in 1976, mostly by art students in Edinburgh, as a rock 'n' roll band. The group of eight made their first public appearance on November 5, 1976 at the Edinburgh Teviot Row Student Union . The line-up at the time consisted of Alan Forbes, who was responsible for the vocals, Dave Smythe on the electric bass, Jo Callis on the lead guitar, Mark Harris on the rhythm guitar, Alasdair Paterson on the drums and Alistair Donaldson, the saxophone. Sheila Hynde and Gayle Warning were responsible for the background vocals. The two women studied fashion design and wore 1960s Mary Quant clothes on stage . Musically the band was influenced by Screaming Lord Sutch , The Dave Clark Five and The Sweet . The Rezillos achieved their first success with the single I Can't Stand My Baby , which was published on the independent label Sensible .

By July 1977 Gayle Warning, Mark Harris and Dave Smythe left the band. Saxophonist Ali Donaldson took over the electric bass. The now five-piece band signed a contract with Sire Records and reached number 17 in the British singles charts in August 1978 with the song Top of the Pops . Her debut album Can't Stand the Rezillos was also listed in August 1978 at number 16. After the album was released, Donaldson was replaced by Simon Templar, but there was always friction among the musicians and the band broke up after a farewell tour in December 1978. A live document of the farewell tour, recorded two days before Christmas 1978, was released in 1979 under the title Mission Accomplished ... But the Beat Goes On and reached number 30 on the British album charts.

The Revillos from 1979 to 1985

Alasdair Paterson, Jo Callis and Simon Templar formed the band Shake, while Alan Forbes and Sheila Hynde, reunited with Mark Harris, continued the concept of the Rezillos. In order to be released from the contract with Sire, they changed the band name to The Revillos. Nicky Forbes was recorded as the drummer and Felix played bass. The two go -go dancers Cherie and Babs, who also called themselves The Revettes , took on the backing vocals. In this formation the band recorded two singles in 1979, Where's the Boy for Me? and Motorbike Beat , and released them on the Snatzo / Dindisc label, a subsidiary of Virgin Records .

In mid-1979 Harris left the band for a different career and was replaced by 17-year-old guitarist Kid Krupa, who can be heard on the 1980 album Rev Up . Felix and Babs left the band and Vince Spik and Drax joined them. The Revillos signed a contract with the Superville label and released the single She's Fallen in Love with a Monster Man and in 1983 the album Attack! . After a series of self-financed concerts in the United States, the group split again in 1985.

The Revillos from 1994 to 1996

In 1994, however, they gave again, together with Kid Krupa on guitar and Mekon on bass, a series of concerts in Japan. The album Live & On Fire in Japan and the EP Yeah Yeah were also made there . As public interest in the band increased, a few live shows arose in the UK in 1996. The compilation From the Freezer was published in 1996 , the concert album Totally Alive in London in 1998 and the anthropology Attack of the Giant Revillos in 1998.

The Rezillos since 2001

Then there was a break again until 2001, when Sheila Hynde, Alan Forbes, Jo Callis and Alasdair Paterson re-activated the group The Rezillos. Captain Oi! Records released previously unreleased songs in 2003 as the album Jungle of Eyes . In November 2012 the band was awarded the Scottish Tartan Clef Award .
