Go-go dancers (also known as go-go dancers ) are women ( go-go girls ) and men ( go-go boys ) who work as pre -dancers in discos , evening clubs or at private parties as employees or self-employed perceive. The aim of the dance is to create a mood through animation and performance and to encourage people to dance. The performance usually takes place in exposed places such as loudspeakers or even in suspended cages.

etymology

The term go-go is derived from the French term à gogo (roughly “in abundance”), which in turn comes from the old French la gogue , joy, happiness; Pleasure, amusement 'derives.

history

The term "go-go dancing" originated in the 1950s in the United States and was rated "adult entertainment" ( adult entertainment ), "male revues", "female revues" and "exotic dancing" in to licensed establishments associated, in which girls performed in pasties and G-strings and presented themselves dancing close to the audience.

With the appearance of dance clubs and discos in the 1960s, the use of the term transformed and now referred to the “good clean fun” of auditioning, which - dressed in modern and fashionable clothes - professionally, for example in Whiskey a Go Go from “à Go-Go Girls ”was carried out. The first cages for go-go dancers to be hung from the ceiling are attributed to Whiskey a Go Go. The first discos in Germany with go-go cages were the Scotch Pub and the Pussycat in Munich .

Forms of appearance

With go-go dancers, the emphasis is on animative dancing. An attempt is made to optimally interpret the current and usually not pre-selected music. Thus, in techno dance differently to House or R 'n' B or party music. The aim is to encourage the generally mixed audience to dance and to entertain the guests standing around the dance floor. Since many go-go dancers have their dance fundamentals in other dance areas such as hip-hop , ballet , jazz dance, etc., one cannot speak of a "dance direction" go-go dance. Rather, dancers combine many dance styles in go-go dance. There are also erotic movements with the go-go dancers, but pointing and touching the chest and the intimate zone is reserved for striptease and tablet dancers.

Go-go dancers are booked for two different forms of performance: On the one hand, there are “only go-go” performances, in which people usually dance four times for 15 minutes, which has become the standard. On the other hand, there are complete show appearances in which the evening begins with an entrance animation in a costume and then two to three rounds of dancing. In between, so-called walk acts are often done. Go-go dancers are also increasingly taking on measures to increase sales in discos. Go-go dancers often hand out so-called “shots”, in which the drink is served from the bottle to the mouth of the guests, or they play games with the guests during the dance breaks, where drinks can be won for a cash stake.

dress

Go-go dancing is subject to trends. In the 1990s, during techno times, people danced in light clothes (for example in a bikini ). In the first versions of the Love Parade , however, you could still see plush costumes in all possible neon colors. At the beginning of 2000 there were many self-made glitter costumes in bold colors. Today you can see more short dresses and high-quality clothing in the clubs, in the large discotheques, however, especially with male go-gos, cut trousers etc. You can occasionally see the go-gos in costume at theme parties, for example as a nurse, police officer or cheerleader .

Today's distinction from striptease

Go-go dancers are often mistaken for strippers in public . However, the go-go and striptease scenes are strictly separated. The go-go dance serves as animation for dancing and a good party atmosphere, while the sexual component is more in the foreground with striptease dancers. Dancing on the table (table dance ) is not common among go-go dancers. Go-go dancers must also be differentiated from strippers in the form that the strippers first enter the stage dressed and then partially or completely undress in the course of the performance. " Topless -Go-gos", the " topless dancing" are frowned upon in professional go-go dancers often. In Austria and Switzerland, on the other hand, a go-go bar is more of a table dance bar.
