Cicely Tyson
Cicely Tyson (born December 19, 1924 in New York City , New York ) is an American film and stage actress and former model . In 2018 she received the honorary Oscar for her life's work.
Life
Cicely Tyson, whose parents immigrated to the United States from Nevis , grew up in a religious home in Harlem and was discovered as a young woman by Ebony , a journal that exclusively depicts African American women. In December 1959, Tyson could be engaged for the play Jolly's Progress on Broadway , which meant a stepping stone into the world of acting for her. In order to be able to stay afloat financially, she worked as a secretary in this early phase.
Her film career, which began in the mid-1950s, was initially limited to guest appearances in television series. Her first leading role was as secretary Jane Foster in the East Side / West Side series . She had supporting roles in 1970, among others, in Kobra, take over and in Rauchende Colts that same year . In 1973 she was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Actress for her portrayal in the drama Sounder and also for the Golden Globe Award . From the late 1970s, she intensified her work in the field of feature and television films. Strong character roles have become a trademark.
A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is dedicated to her. In November 2018 she received the Honorary Oscar for her life's work.
Private life
Tyson was a close friend of US comedian Bill Cosby . On November 26, 1981, she married the musician Miles Davis in his house ; however, the marriage was divorced again in 1988.
Tyson now lives in Atlanta ( Georgia ). In her honor, the Cicely Tyson High School of Performing and Fine arts was founded in East Orange ( New Jersey ) . She has no children herself; her niece is the actress Cathy Tyson, also nominated for a Golden Globe .
