Cynthia Chinasaokwu O. Erivo (born January 8, 1987 in London ) is a British actress and singer . For her portrayal of Celie in the Broadway musical The Color Purple , she received a Tony Award in 2016 and a Grammy and an Emmy in 2017 . For her portrayal of Harriet Tubman in the period film Harriet , she was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar for best actress in 2020 .

Life

Cynthia Erivo was born in London to Nigerian parents and grew up in Stockwell, London . She studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts .

Theater and musical

After graduation, she stood in the piece Marine Parade by Simon Stephens at the Brighton Festival 2010 on stage at the Theater Royal Stratford East , she sang in the musical I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky by John Adams . In 2011, she sang the role of Madeleine in the stage version of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg . This was followed by an engagement in the Musical Sister Act , where she appeared on stage as Deloris Van Cartier / Sister Mary Clarence.

In 2013 she sang the role of Celie in the musical adaptation of the novel Die Farbe Lila (The Color Purple) at the West End Theater Menier Chocolate Factory . In the world premiere of the musical I Can't Sing! In 2014 she sang the female lead Chenice, alongside Nigel Harman in the role of Simon Cowell, in Harry Hill's The X Factor Musical by Harry Hill at the London Palladium .

In December 2015, she premiered as Celine in The Color Purple at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater on Broadway in New York City, alongside Jennifer Hudson as Shug Avery and Danielle Brooks as Sofia. For her performance, she was honored with a Tony Award in the category Best Actress in a Musical in 2016 and received a Creative Arts Daytime Emmy Award in the category Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program in 2017 . For the recording, she was also recognized in the 2017 Grammy Awards in the Best Musical Theater Album category.

Movie and TV

She had her first episode roles in television series such as Chewing Gum (2015), Mr Selfridge and The Tunnel (The Tunnel) (2016).

Your movie debut was in 2018 with the thriller Widows - Deadly widows (Widows) by Steve McQueen , where in addition to Viola Davis , Elizabeth Debicki and Michelle Rodriguez played the role of the nanny Belle. For her portrayal of Darlene Sweet in the US mystery thriller Bad Times at the El Royale by Drew Goddard , she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the London Critics' Circle Film Awards in 2019 .

For the historical film Harriet by Kasi Lemmons , she played the title role of escape helper Harriet Tubman in front of the camera. Her acting performance earned her a nomination in the category Best Actress at the 2020 Academy Awards . She also shot for the science fiction film Chaos Walking by Doug Liman , where she played the role of Hildy. In the HBO miniseries The Outsider based on the novel The Outsider by Stephen King , she took on the role of Holly Gibney.

In late June 2020, Erivo became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences . In July 2020 it was announced that she would take on the lead role in the musical film Talent Show , directed by Gandja Monteiro.
