Grant-Lee Phillips (born September 1, 1963 in Stockton , California ) is an American musician. He is best known as the singer, guitarist and songwriter for the band Grant Lee Buffalo (1992–1999).

Life

Grant-Lee Phillips was born Bryan G. Phillips in Stockton, California in 1963. When he moved to Los Angeles to study film , he founded the band Shiva Burlesque with Jeff Clark , with which he released an album in 1987 and 1990. After that, the band broke up and Phillips began making music under the name Grant Lee Buffalo . Reinforced by drummer Joey Peters and bassist Paul Kimble he signed to Slash Records , a label to Warner Bros. belonged. The band was able to book a success with the 1994 album Mighty Joe Moon and the single Mockingbirds .

In 1995 Rolling Stone Magazine hailed Grant-Lee Phillips as "Best male vocalist". Phillips has had a successful solo career since 1999. He released several albums, including a. Nineteeneighties (2006), which does not contain any of its own songs, just cover versions from the 1980s - including songs by The Cure , Pixies , The Church , Echo & The Bunnymen , New Order and The Smiths .

Grant-Lee Phillips also appeared as an actor in the US series Gilmore Girls from 2001 to 2007 . There Phillips portrayed the city troubadour of the town Stars Hollow. In this role was also seen in the sequel Gilmore Girls: A New Year (2016). He was involved in the film Girl Walks Into a Bar (2011) as both actor and composer .
