action

In the year 2054, people are living almost in isolation and hardly ever leave their homes. Humanoid robots, artificial replicas of the people called, Surrogates ( Engl. Representatives ), take their tasks remotely. Since real people hardly move and injuries to the surrogates have no effect on their owners, so-called operators , the world has changed in recent years to a fear-free and safe environment.

The first murder in years occurs in Boston : When the surrogates of Jared Canter, the son of the surrogate inventor Dr. Lionel Canter and a casual nightclub acquaintance are destroyed on the street by a motorcyclist with an unknown weapon, their operators at home also die - a possibility that has always been ruled out. The FBI puts Agent Tom Greer and his partner Agent Jennifer Peters on the case, who send their surrogates out to investigate.

For years Greer has only had contact with his wife, whom he still loves more than anything, through her surrogates . When she tries to speak to her about it, she evades him.

The motorcyclist is soon identified as Miles Strickland. Strickland is a member of the Dreads , a group of people who have withdrawn from people's slow total devotion to the use of surrogates and live in a demarcated, run-down neighborhood called the reserve , to which surrogates are not allowed. On the way there, Strickland is followed by several police cars and a helicopter in which Agent Greer's surrogate is located. Strickland succeeds in destroying five surrogates of police officers and that of the helicopter pilot with his weapon, thus killing their operators . Greer narrowly escapes death by severing his connection with his surrogate at the last moment . This crashes with the driverless helicopter in the area of the dreads . He can catch Strickland after a chase, but is made harmless by the startled resistance. The operator Greer is badly battered by Strickland's attack in his house and from now on has to fall back on his human abilities for the investigation. To make matters worse, he has been suspended from duty due to unauthorized entry into the Dreads' autonomous territory . Greer later meets Dr. Canter, who tells him to hunt down his son's murderer. Greer himself lost his son, and Dr. Empathize with Canters.

When Greer enters the reservation as a human, Strickland's body is being cremated. Strickland was murdered and the Prophet , the leader of the resistance, took the weapon. Greer is looking for Dr. Canter, who suspects that the weapon was developed by the military. A survey on site confirms his assumption. The weapon injects a virus into the surrogates and destroys them. At the same time, the protective mechanisms through which any harmful repercussions on the operators are to be prevented, which results in their death , also become ineffective .

An unknown surrogate enters and kills Agent Jennifer Peters' apartment in order to take control of her surrogate . Disguised in this way, the stranger at the FBI headquarters finds that Stone, Peters and Greer's superior, is from VSI, which sells the surrogates , and whose CEO, Dr. Canter was previously commissioned, through the henchman Miles Strickland Dr. Killing Canter. The assassination attempt did not fall on Dr. Canter was the victim, but his son Jared, because he - illegally, but with the consent and support of his father - used one of his numerous surrogates .

The military is trying to get the gun back. The area of the dreads is stormed and the prophet is shot, whereby the latter turns out to be a surrogate . The prophet had given the weapon to Peters' surrogate beforehand . This then penetrates into the headquarters of the FBI and connects the weapon to a control system with which every surrogate and his operator can be reached. Meanwhile, Greer goes to Dr. Canters estate and finds numerous of his surrogates there, including several of the prophet and von Peters' murderer. The paraplegic Dr. Canter breaks the connection to Peters' surrogates and reveals to Greer that his idea of a “better world” has been betrayed: The surrogates were primarily intended to enable the physically disadvantaged to lead a normal life. However, VSI saw only profit and now condemned all people to a life without sensation and experience.

With the help of Peters' surrogates , Dr. Canter sets in motion the destruction of all surrogates worldwide, consciously also wanting to bring about the death of all operators , and then kills himself with a poison capsule. Greer takes over with Dr. Canter's control unit uses Peters' surrogates . He succeeds in preventing the destruction of the protective mechanisms of the surrogates and thus the death of their owners. When he now has to decide whether to call Dr. Wanting to destroy Canters endeavors completely or at least destroy the surrogates , he opts for the latter.

All surrogates worldwide break down instantly, wherever they are. There are many car accidents, but only surrogates are damaged. People are slowly coming out of their homes and Greer sees his human wife for the first time in years, who did not want to be seen in her human form due to a disfiguring scar on her face. They both hug.

reception

“The more possibilities the technology offers, the more visionary and concrete the films become. 'Surrogates - My Second Me', the latest trick from Hollywood, even goes so far that a film is presented to us in a world in which we humans not only live side by side with robots, but in which we are even the robots ourselves . Of course, it is the subject of the film that makes the viewer curious. 'If there is a sense of reality, there must also be a sense of possibility', Robert Musil once wrote and so we let 'Surrogates - My Second Self', true to these mottos, catapult us directly into a possible 'world of the future' that is fascinating and scary at the same time. "

- Moviesection.de

“At Surrogates - My Second Self [you can look forward to] an entertaining sci-fi film with a gruff Bruce Willis that offers some nice special effects and action sequences - but without delivering anything really new or spectacular. In view of the untapped potential of the interesting basic idea, the film leaves the viewer slightly disappointed. "

"The film remains between ambition and polished surface and fails to explore the conflict between humans and robots, between experienced reality and a world full of virtual possibilities."
