action
Successful New York publishing editor and Canadian citizen Margaret Tate bullies her entire office, especially her assistant Andrew Paxton. When her visa expires, she faces immediate expulsion from the USA . She then decides to blackmail Andrew into marrying him, and threatens to destroy his career otherwise.
One of her employees, whom Margaret had previously fired, reports her to the immigration authorities . The immigration officer therefore suspects that it is just a sham marriage ; he would like to interview both partners individually in a personal interview what each knows about the other and advises them to cancel the wedding. Otherwise Margaret would be expelled immediately and Andrew would face a five-year prison sentence and a hefty fine. However, this does not deter Margaret from her plan, and Andrew, with the prospect of an editorial position, remains firm. Shortly thereafter, the two travel to Sitka , Alaska for Andrew's grandmother's birthday. Its parents run a veritable empire of family businesses locally and prove to be extraordinarily wealthy. Andrew introduces Margaret to his parents and grandmother, who are delighted with their visit.
In the home of Andrew's family, the two accidentally get closer. At first, both are not enthusiastic about their parents' wish to get married in Alaska, but then they agree. While the family is preparing for the wedding, the immigration officer visits the two of them in Alaska to advise them against the wedding again. He promises them impunity if they admit the fraud immediately, but this time Andrew refuses the offer. In front of the assembled wedding party, Margaret admits the fraud and flees the wedding to fly back to New York. Andrew does not manage to catch up with her at the airport in time, and so he finally follows her to New York to confess his love to her. They become a couple and face immigration questions.

Reviews
“As a tough business woman with a soft core, Sandra Bullock shows one of the best achievements of her career. In a rousing comedy full of gags. "
"With The Proposal - Even is the Bride , young director Anne Fletcher has created a surprisingly charming romantic comedy with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in the leading roles."
“The thing with the expulsion is of course utter nonsense, pulled by the scriptwriter just as much as his saying yes to marriage. But that's exactly how you recognize a good film: If it takes you away, the logic holes don't matter. How the good-looking Assi presents his relatives to his fiancée and how the ice-cold business queen turns into a feeling woman is a staccato of comical climaxes. Including a slapstick nude scene with which Sandra Bullock not only shows her comic talent, but also courage as a woman in her mid-40s. It is the gorgeous presence of the actress that makes the film so special. This is now, Bullock swears, definitely her last appearance in a romance. - »Lively, good-mood film with delicious gags« "
"Entertaining romantic comedy, the story of which only varies well-known standards and conveys clichés, but which, thanks to the accomplished leading actress, unfolds some charm."
