Sir Richard Leslie Taylor , KNZM (born February 7, 1965 in Patumahoe , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand makeup artist and special effects artist. He is the co-founder and director of New Zealand's special effects company Weta Workshop . He was involved in the films of the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as various other films by Peter Jackson .

Taylor is in a relationship with his colleague Tania Rodger, the two have known each other since school.

Awards

Taylor has received numerous awards and several nominations. He was awarded two Oscars for “best visual effects”.

He received three other Oscars for makeup and costumes:

  • 2001 for "Makeup" together with Peter Owen for The Lord of the Rings: The Companions and
  • 2003 for “Makeup” with Peter Swords King and for “ Costume Design ” with Ngila Dickson for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

He has also received three awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

  • 2002 for Achievement in Special Visual Effects with Jim Rygiel, Alex Funke, Randall William Cook and Mark Stetson for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring .
  • 2003 for costume design together with Ngila Dickson for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers .
  • 2006 for Achievement in Special Visual Effects with Joe Letteri, Christian Rivers and Brian Van't Hul for King Kong .

On June 7, 2010 he was knighted as a Knight Companion in the New Zealand Order of Merit and thus ennobled.
