Ernst Schrupp (born April 6, 1915 in Beyenburg near Wuppertal ; † February 19, 2005 in Schwelm ) was a free church theology lecturer , long-time director of the Wiedenest Bible School , co-founder of evangelical works in Germany and author of numerous books on mission theology .

Live and act

Ernst Schrupp completed a commercial apprenticeship before the Second World War . He was badly wounded during the war. After his recovery - as Schrupp reported in his memoirs - he vowed to make the rest of his life available to God.

Ernst Schrupp studied Protestant theology and was appointed lecturer at the Wiedenest Bible School as early as 1948 . In 1959 he also took over its management, which he held until 1980.

Numerous evangelical works and associations of the post-war period can be traced back to Ernst Schrupp's initiatives and impulses. These include the Student Mission in Germany (SMD) , the Working Group Evangelical Missions (AEM) , Evangeliumsrundfunk (ERF) and the evangelical news agency idea . The major evangelistic project Euro 70 with the evangelist Billy Graham also went back to his initiative as a member of the main board of the Evangelical Alliance and became a model for similar projects in the 1980s and 1990s.

Ernst Schrupp was a denominational member of the Brethren movement , but his view always went far beyond the boundaries of his own church community. "It was his wish" - according to the Wiedenest Bible School in an obituary - "to strengthen unity among Christians in order to represent the common missionary mandate effectively and credibly."

Positions

Ernst Schrupp was particularly interested in the history and present of the people of Israel . In this he showed a certain closeness to Christian Zionism .

Schrupp put today's abortion and euthanasia in a "comparison to mass murder in the Third Reich". In his appeal to the Holocaust , he asked how we should address "modern mass murder, the ongoing killing of millions of unwanted life, the challenges of 'abortion' and 'active euthanasia' as excesses of modern social Darwinism ".
