Once Were Warriors (Once were Warriors) is a New Zealand film directed by Lee Tamahori from the year 1994 . The film is based on a novel, the first work by Alan Duff , which was highly successful in 1991 .

In 1999, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? rotated the sequel.

action

The film is about the Māori family Heke in a city of what is now New Zealand and about domestic violence. The father of the family is violent, the family feels marginalized in New Zealand society. The film makes certain references to the warlike past of the Māori people.

criticism

Lexicon of the international film : “A startlingly realistic, grippingly staged and, above all, convincingly played family tragedy in the female lead. The film also looks for the causes of the catastrophe in the social conditions and criticizes the displacement of the local culture by the (bad) customs of the whites. "

Awards

The film received a total of 19 first prizes worldwide, for example at the Film Festival in Montreal , the Venice Film Festival and the International Film Festival Rotterdam .
