Next is an American action film from the year 2007 by director Lee Tamahori with Nicolas Cage in the lead role. The basic idea of the film is based on the science fiction - short story The Golden Man of the author Philip K. Dick . The actual plot of the film, however, has almost no points of contact with the literary model.

action

Cris Johnson was born with the ability to see into his own future for exactly two minutes. Under his stage name "Frank Cadillac" he earns his living as a magician , gambling and stealing cars in Las Vegas . Because his winning streak is noticed after a while, a casino owner wants the security service to arrest him. Johnson escapes, but wants to cash out his winnings before leaving the casino. In one of his visions of the future, he witnessed a robbery on the casino cash register, in which two people were shot. To prevent these deaths, he overpowers the gangster before he can draw his gun. Unfortunately, the casino security guards spotted him holding this weapon and falsely accused him of a crime. When the FBI learns that European terrorists, led by Mr. Smith, are planning to detonate an atomic bomb near Los Angeles , he is pursued by FBI agent Callie Ferris, who wants to use his skills to better investigate the crime and he does longer in mind. The terrorists learn that Cris could pose a threat to them and want to eliminate him.

On his way, Johnson meets the young Liz, of whom he had previously had a vision . He therefore suspects a special meaning and contacts her. Eventually, he can persuade her to take him on their intended long-distance drive. When they have to turn around due to a roadblock due to an undermined mountain pass and spend the night in a motel , they are tracked down by the FBI and the terrorists. Johnson separates from Liz and goes on the run again, but is caught by Ferris. During interrogation, he suspects, based on TV reports that inspire him to visions, that Liz is being taken hostage by the terrorists and finally, while she is confined to a wheelchair, is killed by an explosive device detonating. Johnson is now working with the FBI to prevent Liz's murder.

When the terrorists try to prepare the murder of Liz, they are surprised by the FBI and a firefight breaks out . A small group of terrorists holed up with Liz on a cargo ship , but Liz was finally freed. When a special squad tries to defuse the atomic bomb, Ferris discovers that the location of the bomb has been relocated. Johnson is supposed to find out the new location with the help of a seismograph . After a short time he realizes with horror that he must have made a mistake during the day. At the same moment the atomic bomb detonates a few kilometers away. After a short and strong pressure wave, all life in the immediate vicinity is extinguished by a huge cylinder of flame.

Suddenly Johnson is back in the motel next to Liz in bed after the night together, apparently what he saw was only a vision of a possible future. He decides to help Agent Ferris find the stolen atomic bomb immediately, provided that Liz is kept out of the whole thing.

background

The film is based in its basic idea - a person can look for a few minutes into the future - very loosely on the short story The Golden Man (English. The Golden Man ) by Philip K. Dick . Its budget was about $ 70 million. The grossing result was around $ 76 million. The German premiere was on July 19, 2007.

In the scene in which Cris reveals his ability to see into the future to Liz, a scene from Stanley Kubrick's film Dr. Strange or: How I Learned to Love the 1964 Bomb . Another allusion to another Stanley Kubrick film can be found in a later scene: Cris is tied to a chair by the FBI and forced to watch a news program, with his eyelids locked so that he cannot close them. In Uhrwerk Orange from 1971, the protagonist, Alexander DeLarge, is subjected to a comparable “treatment”.

Unusually, the credits don't run from bottom to top like in other films, but in reverse, from top to bottom.

Reviews

James Berardinelli judged the film wasn't bad, but the movie's makers gave it an unsatisfactory ending. He would understand if some viewers felt betrayed by the film.

The lexicon of international film sees the film as "a poor dramaturgical and dramatic implementation of a short story by Philip K. Dick, who fails to create tension and fathom the depths of the literary original".

Awards

At the “California on Location Awards 2006”, Liz Matthews received the “COLA” award in the “Best Location” category. Jessica Biel was nominated at the “ Teen Choice Awards ” 2007 in the category “Best Actress”. In 2008 the film received a nomination for the negative film award Golden Raspberry : Nicolas Cage for worst leading actor (also for his performances in Ghost Rider and The Legacy of the Secret Book ).

The German synchronization was carried out by Film- & Fernseh-Synchron under the dialogue direction of Axel Malzacher , for which Klaus Bickert wrote the dialogue book.
