Gary L. Goldman (born September 17, 1953 ) is an American screenwriter and director .

Life

Goldman grew up in New Orleans , where he attended Ben Franklin High School.

He studied at Brandeis University in Waltham , Massachusetts until 1975 . Early on, he showed an interest in filmmaking, initially aiming for a career as a director. He moved to the University of California, Los Angeles , where he studied film studies. During this time Goldman met French director Louis Malle , with whom he was working on the drama Pretty Baby .

Goldman later made various documentaries, including Degas in New Orleans , for which he was able to win Louis Malle as narrator. The film received an invitation to the 1978 Cannes International Film Festival , where it was shown in the Un Certain Regard category . In 1979 he shot the documentary Yes Ma'am in New Orleans , which was devoted to the difficult relationship between black domestic helpers and their white workers.

Goldmann then worked for two years as Production and Development Executive for producers Lawrence Gordon and Joel Silver at Paramount Pictures .

Goldman co-wrote the script for John Carpenter's fantasy film Big Trouble in Little China with David Z. Weinstein . Goldman and Weinstein only had to have their writing credits confirmed by a decision by the Writers Guild of America , after the studio had previously had the script revised by WD Richter and named him as the scriptwriter. The film received mixed reviews when it was released and flopped at the box office. Only when it was published on video did it become a success over the years and an insider tip for many fans.

Goldman's next script project Warrior was never made into a film, but it caught Paul Verhoeven's interest . This brought Goldman together with Ron Shusett and Dan O'Bannon so that they could work on the script of Total Recall , the adaptation of which Ron Shusett had already acquired an option for in 1976. The film was made into a film by Verhoeven in 1990 with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role. Goldman, Shusett and O'Bannon were nominated for the screenplay at the 1991 Saturn Awards for Best Screenplay .

The 1990 war film Navy Seals - The toughest elite troop in the world with Charlie Sheen , Michael Biehn and Bill Paxton in the lead roles fell through the criticism. Goldman later ruled that the director "took whatever was good in his script and then filmed the rest".

Goldman then wrote a first draft for a never-made X-Men film, the rights of which were acquired by Carolco Pictures in 1991.

In 1992 he worked again for Paul Verhoeven as Script Doctor on the script of the erotic thriller Basic Instinct .

Ron Shusett and Gary Goldman spent many years working on an adaptation of The Minority Report , a short story by Philip K. Dick . There were three script drafts, but in the end the final script did not contain enough of their work, so they were denied a writing credit. When director Steven Spielberg finally filmed the script as Minority Report in 2002 , Goldman and Shusett were named executive producers .

For the 2007 action film Next , Goldman wrote a script, the basic idea of which is based on the short story The Golden Man by Philip K. Dick.

Goldman has taught at the University of Southern California , Northwestern University and Chapman University , among others .
