action

In the days of the Wild West, Mephistopheles sent out a cursed bounty hunter called the Ghost Rider to hunt down everyone who escaped Hell to collect a contract that would bring the devil 1000 damned souls from the village of San Venganza. However, the Ghost Rider, realizing the terrible power inherent in this contract, refused to turn it over to the devil. He deprived Mephistopheles of the treaty and with it about 1000 souls. Instead, he fled and hid himself and the contract.

150 years later: 17-year-old motorcycle stunt rider Johnny Blaze makes a pact with the devil. To save his cancerous father from imminent death, he sells his soul to the evil Mephistopheles. As promised, Mephistopheles initially heals Johnny's father, but the same day he dies in an accident during his motorcycle show. Desperate, Johnny gets on his motorcycle, but he doesn't get very far, because Mephistopheles is already waiting for him. The devil explains to him that he has to part with everything that is important to him; his family, friends and his great love Roxanne Simpson. Johnny drives to the tree where he had an appointment with Roxanne for the day to run away together and drives away without saying a word.

Years later, Johnny became a famous stunt driver, known for his daring jumps and for his uncanny talent to survive life-threatening accidents unharmed. His manager and best friend Mack suspects that Johnny must have a guardian angel, but Johnny thinks it's something else entirely. During his new jump he meets Roxanne, who now works as a reporter. They arrange to meet for dinner and Johnny is now hoping for a second chance, maybe even the possibility of being able to break the contract with the devil, but just then Mephistopheles appears and forces Johnny to do his first job.

Blackheart , the son of the devil, came to earth and wants to get the lost contract of San Venganza for himself in order to outdo his father. To do this, he gathers the so-called "three hidden ones" around him - three fallen angels who were expelled from heaven by the Archangel Michael and who have now each assumed the form of one of the elements earth (Gressil), water (Wallow) and air (Abigor) to wait in this state for judgment day.

Mephistopheles visits Johnny and forces him to become the fiery Ghost Rider. He promises to get his soul back if he manages to bring down Blackheart and his followers. Meanwhile, the gang appears at an old train station, where there was once a cemetery. A night watchman tells them that all the bodies have been reburied, and Blackheart immediately kills them. Johnny ends up on his "first ride" on his transformed chopper exactly at this train station, whereby his newly awakened power causes enormous damage on the way there. Once there, he transforms completely into the Ghost Rider and a fight breaks out, in the course of which Johnny makes a long heavy iron chain his weapon and kills Gressil.

The Ghost Rider is on his way back to town when he hears a young woman screaming who is about to be ambushed by a man. He saves them using the gaze of punishment . This power makes the rider see all the bad things that a person has committed in his life. At the same time, these deeds are projected back onto the sinner, he feels the pain of his victims. During this process, the sinner's soul is burned. So the soul of the crook burns and he falls catatonic to the ground.

Johnny transforms back in the first rays of morning and collapses in a cemetery. When he wakes up again, he is in a small cemetery chapel, in front of which he meets the caretaker (cemetery attendant) who seems to know everything about the history of the Ghost Rider. When he is back home later and tries to control his strength, Roxanne comes across as a surprise. He reveals himself to her as the devil's bounty hunter, but as expected, she doesn't believe a word and leaves the apartment hurt. As soon as Roxanne has left, the police appear, who have tracked him down through the number plate of his motorcycle found on the destroyed streets and arrest him. Johnny is considered to be the prime suspect in the numerous murders committed by Blackheart and the Fallen Angels.

He is put in a cell with several other criminals, who mock and beat him up, but are then incapacitated by Johnny, who has turned into the Ghost Rider. He only spares one boy because he knows intuitively that he is innocent. After escaping from the police station, the Ghost Rider is followed by all units. When he drives up a vertical house wall, Roxanne discovers him, who lives in an adjacent hotel. Now she realizes that Johnny didn't lie to her. While the rider is defeating Abigor on the roof, she runs to the policemen who have surrounded the building. Once at the bottom, the rider recognizes Roxanne and the otherwise red flames around his head turn blue. But the police open fire and the Ghost Rider takes off. Meanwhile, Blackheart has been watching from a safe distance and now knows that Roxanne is Johnny's weak point.

Johnny visits the caretaker again, who tells him the story of his predecessor. Carter Slade, a Texas ranger who is referred to as "a man of honor" by the caretaker, but who became greedy and ultimately waited in prison for the rope. Slade made a deal with Mephistopheles that promised him freedom if Slade would become his ghost rider in return.

The caretaker advises Johnny to stay away from those he loves, otherwise Blackheart will use them as leverage against him. Johnny immediately goes in search of Roxanne, who now appears worried in Johnny's apartment, where she meets Mack, who is also waiting for Johnny. He asks her to go back to where she came from, as Johnny's problems have only started since she showed up. She then explains to him that she loves Johnny and wants to help him. Mack now tells her about the books that Johnny reads, which deal with demon science and the like. Roxanne begins to read it and realizes the connections with horror.

Now Blackheart appears and kills Mack only to stun Roxanne afterwards. When Johnny later shows up and finds the dead Mack and the drugged Roxanne, he is almost overwhelmed by Blackheart. He transforms into the Ghost Rider and tries to defeat Blackheart with the look of punishment, but the Devil's son has no soul to burn. Instead, he wants the Ghost Rider to get him the contract of San Venganza, otherwise Roxanne will die. He gives him time until dawn and will be waiting for him in the cursed ghost town. Johnny returns to the cemetery and tries to get the contract from Slade's grave, but the caretaker holds him back and says that the contract is not there. He smashes his shovel and the contract is in its wooden shaft. Johnny convinces him that he can trust him and the caretaker calls out to Venganza, 500 miles away. Now it becomes clear that the Caretaker himself is Carter Slade, alive thanks to his own power as a Ghost Rider. Together they ride into the desert, Slade on his fiery skeleton horse and Johnny on his fiery skeleton motorcycle. They stop some distance from town and Slade gives Johnny his shotgun ( Winchester Model 1887 shotgun). Both transform back and Slade reveals to Johnny that his path ends here, because his strength has been used up, he could only transform once more.

On the way to town, Johnny is attacked by Wallow, who pulls him underwater and is killed by the Rider. He continues to town and gives Blackheart the contract in exchange with Roxanne. This now absorbs the 1000 souls and is then called Legion . After some fighting they all end up in a church and the rider and Roxanne shoot Blackheart several times without success. Now Johnny remembers Slade's advice to "stay in the shadows" as this is the source of his power. He holds the empty pump gun in the shadows and it turns into a Ghost Rider weapon. Johnny hits Blackheart with a load of hellfire that tears him apart. However, the souls of San Venganza immediately begin to restore his body. But Blackheart did not consider that with the 1000 damned souls in him he is no longer immune to the gaze of punishment. The rider burns souls and throws Blackheart's still body aside. Roxanne is not afraid of the monstrous appearance of Johnny, as soon as she puts her hand on his cheek, he turns back.

Now Mephistopheles appears and gives Johnny his soul back. However, when he wants to remove the curse of the Ghost Rider from him, Johnny refuses. He promises to use his power against Mephistopheles and punish those who do evil to the innocent. When the devil realizes that he has lost both a soul and the rider's strength, he swears vengeance. Johnny then confronts him with his favorite sentence: “One must not live in fear”, before Mephistopheles disappears in a rage.

At the end, Johnny and Roxanne exchange a few words on the tree in whose bark Johnny carved the words J&R FOREVER years ago . Roxanne says that Johnny has now got his second chance, which he should use now, and the two kiss before Johnny gets on his motorcycle, transforms into the Ghost Rider and drives away.

Reviews

"... a laughing stock in a quintet line-up."

- Jürg Zbinden

"... told straightforwardly in the most beautiful B tradition ."

“Where's the $ 120 million budget? The tricks would be charming in a B-movie, logic blunders aren't an obstacle in the genre. It is worse that nothing happens forever, the villain looks laughable and the most charismatic character (Sam Elliott as gravedigger) is hidden in a supporting role. Eva Mendes noticed which cucumber she landed in and stopped acting from the start. Conclusion: abandoned by all good spirits. "

"Elaborate film adaptation of a US comic, which has a lot to offer friends of the genre, but the bottom line is that the result is out of proportion to the effort put into it."
