Rebel Melanie Elizabeth Wilson (* 2. March 1980 as Melanie Elizabeth Bownds in Sydney , New South Wales ) is an Australian actress , screenwriter , film producer and stand-up comedian .

life and career

Wilson first studied law and art at the University of New South Wales . She completed her acting training at The Australian Theater for Young People (ATYP) and later continued her training as part of a scholarship with the US theater group The Second City . She then performed with the Sydney Theater Company and at the Melbourne Comedy Festival .

Wilson was first known in Australia for her role as Toula in five seasons of the television series Pizza . This was later followed by appearances on various television shows, including from 2006 to 2007 in the comedy show The Wedge . After a short role as Kristen Wiig's flatmate in the comedy Brautalarm (2011), she also received initial offers for larger roles in US productions. In 2012 she was in Our Biggest Friend's Wedding , Small Apartments , What Happens When It Happened and Pitch Perfect .

In 2017 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

In September 2017, the Supreme Court of the Australian state of Victoria sentenced Bauer Media Group to pay Wilson US $ 4,567,472 (around 3 million euros, the highest such sum in Australian legal history) for defamation. This included $ 3,917,472 in compensation for lost film roles because Wilson was portrayed as a notorious liar in company magazines. In June 2018, an appeals court reduced the amount of compensation to the equivalent of around EUR 380,000.

In 2019, she wrote the screenplay for Hollywood's first K-pop film Seoul Girls , due to be released by Lionsgate in 2020.
