action

The photographer Robert Green is supposed to take photos of the photo model Mickey Morse in Alaska . She is accompanied by her older and wealthy husband, Charles Morse, who soon realizes that she is cheating on him with the photographer. When Robert sees an old Indian in a photo, he wants to take a series of photos. Since the Indian lives on a distant lake, he undertakes a flight to this lake with Charles, his assistant Stephen and the pilot. During the flight, Charles asks Robert if he would like to kill him. Before there can be an answer, the plane gets caught in a flock of birds and crashes into a lake. The pilot dies instantly. The three other men save themselves, but are soon confronted with the dangers of the wilderness . Charles' knowledge of life in the wild will help them overcome most hazards. After Stephen has been attacked and eaten by a Kodiak bear , the bear hunts Robert and Charles, as Charles' assessment has given him a "taste for people". The two are forced to work together, and they manage to kill the bear.

When they finally reach a hut where they find a map and a rifle, Robert believes that he no longer needs Charles to find his way back to civilization. He intends to kill Charles. Robert is not only jealous of Charles' beautiful young wife, but also envious of his enormous wealth.

Robert, who got drunk on courage for the murder, is nervous and seriously injured when he falls into a pit that serves as a bear trap. Although Charles provides him with medical care, Robert dies as a result of the accident during the march through the wilderness. Shortly before his death, he asks Charles for forgiveness and tells him that the woman was not privy to the murder plan. Charles Morse is the only one saved.

Back in civilization, he tells his wife that he knows everything about adultery. He then tells the press that Robert died trying to save his life.

criticism

James Berardinelli wrote on movie-reviews.colossus.net that the film was more of a parody of an adventure film. He said the scriptwriter and the director had completely different concepts of the film. Berardinelli praised the music by Jerry Goldsmith and the special effects in the scene of the plane disaster. In the "Chicago Sun-Times" of September 26, 1997, Roger Ebert found the clichés of the film amusing ("funny"). TV Movie 8/1998 certified the film as having "psychological depth". Film-dienst 8/1998 praised the nature shots and criticized that the film was neither an adventure film nor a “psychological chamber play”; the "weak" script was also criticized. Der Spiegel 16/1998 described the film as implausible. Hans Schifferle found in the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” of April 16, 1998 that Tamahori had made a “precise, gripping film” that “hides some secrets in its simple structure. Tamahori could become one of Hollywood's last auteurs , succeeding Andrew Marton , Robert Aldrich and John Huston . ”In the“ Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ”on April 17, 1998, Lars-Olav Beier wrote :“ Sometimes The Edge is marginalized a self-discovery trip under extreme conditions, an adventure vacation for the tormented soul, even if the film never crashes in the end. The attraction of Mamet's scripts is that their construction always shines through, but this time the artificiality contrasts strongly with the ambience in which the film is set. "
